We celebrate the life of Frederick Capanzana Sunglao. Born on December 23rd, 1976, Erick spent his life in San Diego until his passing on February 18th, 2026. He is a beloved son, survived by his father, Federico. He is a cherished brother to his siblings Rochelle, Ferdinand, Rita, and Malia. He shared nearly two decades of his life loving Maricris. Many who know Erick describe him as kind. He was not a loud presence, but his sense of humor, intelligence, and willingness to offer patience are notable characteristics that those who love him will fondly remember.
Erick led a quiet life, filled with many peaceful activities. He spent it loving his family which includes the family dogs. His love for nature and animals meant many trips to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. He enjoyed the tide pools near the Cabrillo Monument and Point Loma lighthouse, and watched the koi swimming in the pond of the Japanese Friendship Garden. When Rita was young, he would take her to experience free Tuesdays at Balboa Park. They walked through the museums to share quality time and culture. He would often enjoy a sunrise or sunset at Mount Helix with Maricris.
During childhood, Erick developed an appreciation for food, and that followed him through the rest of his life. His summer breaks high school were spent cooking with Rochelle and Fernan. They would watch cooking shows, create grocery lists, and try out new techniques together. Erick has helped nurture the cooking capabilities of his younger siblings, and without his knowing, Erick influenced Rochelle to consider culinary school. Fernan is a restaurant owner and cook. The love for food and the act of caring for others through sharing a meal will be carried on in his memory.
In his teens Erick developed an enthusiasm for music. Rochelle and Fernan remember going through his collection of cassettes and CDs to look at the album covers while something played on his boombox. They would wander the music section together, they shared a love for 90s and 00s hip hop and rap, and would talk about the latest music videos on MTV. Rochelle and Fernan shared their earliest live music experiences with Erick. Erick's music tastes varied greatly. He enjoyed going to Adam's Avenue Street Fair or to Old Town events where he could listen to bands play. His musical tastes varied through a wide range of genres, making him a lifelong audiophile.
Among his many interests, Erick enjoyed sports. He always rooted for the Padres and the Chargers. This became a point of connection for him and Fernan, which created one of the many bonds that brought them together. Spectating at home and in person at the ball park are among the many memories that are being held close today.
Erick helped his siblings see the world on a larger scale in all the ways he shared his interests. From movies, to comics, to music, to Star Wars, and food, he has imprinted in ways that will have a lasting impact on their lives. When Malia was born, he was able to find a renewed sense of childlike wonder. It was seen in his interactions with her, and engaging in play. Something so simple as playing catch, taking interest in her crafts, and speaking to her not as a child, but more of an equal is going to continue to be tremendous in her life.
The loss of the eldest sibling and first child is marked with deep grief and sorrow. As we celebrate his life, we will remember how he contributed to the shaping of his siblings that came after him and the parent that Fred became. Erick, you have always been loved and you will continue to be loved.
