September 20, 1944 – January 2, 2019
George W. Moberg Jr. was born on September 20th, 1944 and passed away with his loving daughters by his side on January 2nd, 2019 at the Veteran’s Home of Chula Vista. He is preceded in death by his mother, Marion Hatfield Leddy, his father George Moberg and his wife Mary Ann Hardin Moberg. He is survived by his sisters, Cynthia (Tillinghast) of Connecticut and Joyce (Liana) of Virginia, his daughters, Virginia (Carranza) of SD, Sara (Palmani) of AZ, Georgina (Taylor) of ME, Wandah (Concepcion) of SD and Marion (Gamble) of El Cajon. Grandchildren; Maui, Vanessa, Patty, Cynthia, Sara, Jessica, Alfred, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Evan, Jon, Stephen, Joshua, Maria, Owen, Justin, Bailey, Ella, Ethan, Felicia and Larissa. He was also a great-grandfather to 14 beautiful great-grand-children.
He was born in Hartford, Connecticut but also lived in Coventry, Manchester and Hebron, Connecticut. He was in the first graduating class at the brand-new Manchester High School in 1962. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Navy and served from September 1963 until September 1967 as an Aircraft Mechanic. During his time in the Navy he took part in the Vietnam War while attached to the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Two on board the USS Hornet CVS-12. Besides being an Aircraft Mechanic, he also did search and rescue missions amongst other duties. His squadron developed the technique of both day and night in-flight refueling from a destroyer. During this time, the Squadron accomplished the first night-rescue from enemy territory by a Navy helicopter in North Vietnam. George was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal (with 2 Bronze Stars), Vietnam Campaign Medal (with Device). Before leaving for Vietnam he was stationed in San Diego, where he met his first wife of 18 years Emma Castillo and raised their daughters. After leaving the Navy he went to work for Rohr/Goodrich/UTC as a mechanic and worked his way up to Supervisor of Shipping. He retired after 34 years of service there. During this time George and Emma divorced and he remarried to Mary Ann Hardin Moberg, they were married for 28 years. After retiring from Rohr, George and Mary Ann moved to Parkersburg WV to be close to her family and assist with the care of her parents. Mary passed suddenly in May 2013 and George returned to San Diego to be near his family in 2014. George battled Parkinson’s and a small bout of lung cancer but always enjoyed life, fishing, building and flying remote control airplanes. He loved camping, motorcycles and great danes. No matter what he was doing he enjoyed his work and his family.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the VA Home of Chula Vista and all the caring staff for their wonderful support in the last year. They took great care of our father and they became like family.
Memorial Services will be on Wednesday, January 16th at 12:30, Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary, Little Chapel of the Roses, 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita, followed by a Committal Service at 2:30, Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego. A reception will follow at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 3348 Sweetwater Springs Blvd, Spring Valley.
