Gladys was born July 30, 1944 to Henry and Florence Eagles in Brooklyn, NY, the third of six children. She was raised in Billerica, MA and graduated in 1962 from Billerica High School. She was very active in sports including field hockey, basketball, softball, and lettered in all her sports. She was also sought after for her leadership abilities.
After graduating high school, Gladys moved to San Diego in 1962, following her mother’s sister, where she spent the next 58 years. Gladys met her first husband John Leon Hickman and raised three boys. The two divorced in 1977. Gladys met and married Richard “Dick” John Anderson in 1980. Dick enjoyed sharing Gladys’ love of sports with her, watching her play softball and bowling and joined her when he could. He preceded Gladys in death in 2004.
Gladys was employed for over forty years by the United States Postal Service and retired in 2009. She started out pitching mail at the main post office on Midway in 1969 until she was given the chance to become a letter carrier in La Mesa. She later was promoted to Station Manager and served in that capacity at many different post office locations around San Diego. As a postal supervisor, Gladys spent many years in the National Association of Postal Supervisors (NAPS) organization, serving as President, Vice President, and Area Vice President, both locally and Secretary of the California NAPS 905 branch. She thoroughly enjoyed her time serving her fellow supervisors in NAPS and has many fond memories of the time she spent in that organization and the new friends she made there. In 2009, she retired from the USPS where she was station manager at the San Ysidro location at that time. She enjoyed her retirement and being a full-time grandma to her grandchildren and neighbors.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Eagles and Florence Eagles, her brother Larry Kalakauskis, and her beloved husband Richard “Dick” Anderson. She is survived by her siblings, Edward (Carol) Kalakauskis of St. Petersburg, FL; Carol Eagles of Claremont, CA; Betty Ann (Maurice) Aubry of Dracut, MA; Henry “Butch” (Pat) Eagles of Billerica, MA; her sons John (Gail) Hickman of Spring Valley, CA; Ron Hickman of Jamul, CA; and Gregory “Brian” (Donna) Hickman of Dickinson, ND; stepson Paul (Andrea) Anderson of Clayton, CA; and stepdaughter Colleen Finley of Oakland, CA; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
