Gregg V. Barrera (Greggy), age 47, was born on Sunday, December 19, 1976 in Oahu Hawaii and passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 6, 2024 in San Diego, CA with his beloved mom Sonia Velandria Barrera, dad Renato Vierras Barrera, younger brother Gerald V. Barrera, older brother Glenn V. Barrera, and sister-in-law Melissa D. Barrera by his side.
Gregg was a dear Uncle/Tio to his favorite nephew Tristan J. Diloy Barrera, who brought him so much love, joy, and laughter.
Shortly after graduating from Bonita Vista High School in 1995 Gregg proudly joined the United States Marine Corps Reserves where he went on to serve his country for 6 years alongside his fellow Marines of the 4th Medical Battalion. Gregg described earning the title United States Marine as “… the Proudest moment of [his] life …”
In 2002 Gregg began his civil service duty with the Department of Homeland Security when he became a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) Officer for the San Diego International Airport. In 2010 he was awarded the Transportation Security Officer of the Year for his outstanding service and commitment. Gregg continued his service with TSA until 2017.
Toward the end of Gregg’s tenure at TSA, he did side work with Uber and also began mobile car detailing part-time. With his passion and dedication, Gregg turned the side job into a successful and thriving full-time business in 2015 when his younger brother Gerald and Gregg proudly opened up a window tint & auto detailing shop in the City Heights area of San Diego - MVP Auto Salon.
In August of 2020, Gregg was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) in the right temporal and frontal lobe. Defying the odds, he fought with courage and determination for the next 3 years pulling his strength from his love for his family and friends.
On December 19, 2023 Gregg celebrated his 47th birthday surrounded by his family eating his favorite foods: buffalo WINGS, red velvet cupcakes and a leche flan birthday cake his mom had baked.
Gregg extended his love for his family and friends to his love of tacos, wings, and boba. He was very outgoing and always out spending quality time with his many friends. He had a strong love for nature and was an active hiker who loved to mountain bike, camp, and explore. Gregg was an avid traveler regularly visiting Mexico and Hawaii and discovering places like Jamaica, Alaska, and beyond.
Throughout his life, Gregg connected with so many people and captured the hearts of all he encountered. He loved people and thrived on making new friends. He was deeply interested in knowing others, hearing their stories, and was grateful for every connection he made. He held his friendships dear and often referred to his friends as “his people” because they provided him strength, joy, and tons of laughter 🙂
Gregg truly had a heart of gold, always looking out for others, lending a listening ear, and bringing laughter to those around him. He left a profound impact to all he met and his absence will surely be felt by the countless individuals whose lives he touched. He lived a full and rewarding life while his family and friends remained his greatest source of joy and pride.
Gregg’s legacy will live on through the many hearts fortunate enough to know him. His humor, his kindness, and his love will forever be cherished by all. You are forever in our hearts and memories! Rest in peace Greggy!!
“There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, the light remains.”
