Helen Marie Daum was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She passed away on October 29, 2021 the age of 98. Her battle with dementia in recent years showed her courage in facing life changes with a smile. Helen stayed strong until the end.
Helen was born on August 8, 1923 to Beaulah and Oscar Bond. She had 3 brothers and 3 sisters. She lived through the Great Depression and then World War II. Like
most others, she dropped out of school to go to work and help with the war effort.
After her daughter graduated from high school, Helen went back to school and received her high school diploma. She first worked in the kitchen for the school district but moved up to an office position. The rest of her employment was spent as a secretary to other businesses. After her retirement Helen joined the Seniors Club, which met at a Senior Center close to her home. There she was able to join some groups there, including a crocheting group and a lunch group.
She trained her dog Mitzi (a Pomeranian) to be a licensed therapy dog (licensed through the police department). They would go to long term care facilities around the area to visit with the residents there and let them interact with the dog.
Helen loved crocheting, working cross word puzzles, and anything hummingbirds. After her marriage to Robert Daum, she loved camping in their 5th wheel, and then motorhome. The Moose Lodge and Camper Club members became her best friends. Of course, she spent many hours at her grandchildren’s (and later, great grandchildren’s) games and performances. These were her top priority. Any other free time was usually spent at the lodge or camping with the camper club.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Vonnie Arellano Hutcherson and Sherrill Rugg. A niece, Loretta Anderson and two nephews, Bill Schreib and Jim Bain. Grandchildren Robert Paul Chatham, Richard Justin Chatham, Michael Arellano Jr., Kasandra Arellano, Jeremiah Stephen Robert Rugg, Nathan Hutcherson and Amy Hutcherson. Great grandchildren include Meleah Chatham, Layla Chatham, Regan Chatham, Connelly Brown, MiKylie Brusa, Jeremiah Caadyn Stephen, Shaylee Stephen, Aiiyana Hutcherson and Ian Hutcherson.
A gravesite service is scheduled for 1:00 pm on November 15, 2021 at Glen Abbey.
One of Helen’s favorite bible verse was Isaiah 41:10 – Fear Not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God’ I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
