It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Hermelinda Castillo Morante, beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend, who peacefully departed on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the age of 80. Hermelinda passed away in La Mesa, CA, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in Dagupan City, Philippines, on July 27, 1944, Hermelinda was the daughter of Justo and Tranquilina Castillo. As the eldest of five siblings, she took on a role of caretaker from an early age, ensuring her family was always well cared for. This selfless devotion to family continued throughout her life and defined her character.
Hermelinda, formerly married to Eduardo U. Morante, made the brave decision to move to the United States, where she devoted herself to helping her extended family settle in San Diego. Her greatest passion was always her family, especially her son, Eduardo (Debbie) Morante, and daughter, Maria Elena (Darren) Morante. She was a proud mother who found joy in watching her children grow into responsible, compassionate adults. For the past 19 years, she single-handedly guided and supported them, radiating pride and love every step of the way.
Hermelinda was a dedicated civilian analyst for the government for many years, a role in which she earned the respect of her colleagues and made lasting contributions. Outside of her professional life, Hermelinda was a devoted member of St. Martin’s and St. Michael’s. She cherished the time spent with family, especially during weekends and holidays, when she could host gatherings that brought joy and warmth to all.
In addition to family, Hermelinda had a love for travel, having ventured to China and enjoyed cruising the Mediterranean. She also had a special bond with her beloved dog, Mia Elaine Morante, who predeceased her.
Hermelinda’s life was filled with kindness, grace, and devotion. Her love and care extended beyond her immediate family to her sisters, Evangeline Castillo, and Donna (Leon) Arciaga, brothers, Reynaldo (Elizabeth) Castillo and Arnulfo (Teresita) Castillo, and a host of nephews and nieces who held a special place in her heart.
Hermelinda’s legacy will live on through her children and the many lives she touched with her generosity, compassion, and unwavering love.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to be made to her church or to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
