Jack Walquist passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday January 13, 2013 while asleep. Jack was born in his parent’s home in Marine on St. Croix Minnesota on January 19, 1926. He attended Grade School in Marine and then High School in Stillwater Minnesota.
With WWII threatening the United States, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 which brought him into the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 as a radioman aboard LCI 409. After WWII, Jack was sent to Korea during the Korean War, after which he left the navy and joined the Coast Guard, from which he retired in 1965 as a Chief Petty Officer.
In 1953, Jack married Cynthia Holcomb and together they were blessed with two sons, Keith and Kent. In 196Jack and Cynthia moved to Chula Vista with their sons, making the small, quiet town their home. After leaving the Coast Guard, Jack worked in the transportation department of the Chula Vista Elementary School District, retiring after 20 years. J ack enjoyed singing with the choir wherever he attended church also has fond memories of singing at the Billy Graham Crusade with the Saint Marks Choir and George Beverly Shea. He had a love for the sea, was an avid scuba diver and sailor, which he passed along to his sons.
Jack is survived by his wife of 59 years, Cynthia Walquist, his sons, Keith (wife Judy) and Kent, and three grandchildren, Jennifer George (husband Bobby), Bryan, and Steven. He is also survived by three step grandchildren, Diane, Cheri, and Scott, and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service for Jack will be held at Saint Mark’s Lutheran church at 580 Hilltop Drive in Chula Vista, California on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 11:00.
