As a young boy Jim and his family lived in various parts of the US because his father was career US Navy. Chula Vista, California was the Lannom’s home base.
Prior to earning his BS in Electrical Engineering in the early 1970s from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, Jim also attended the University of Nebraska where he became a lifelong Huskers fan. He spent most of his career at Xerox Corporation in Webster, NY as an electrical engineer in the Research Division. He holds several US patents. He retired in 2000 and returned to Chula Vista where he and Jayne have lived for 21 years. He worked for a few more years as an electrical engineer before opening the Bonita Woodshop. He always enjoyed designing and producing special orders for entertainment centers, tables, kitchen cabinets. Most of all he enjoyed the customers he met.
In his spare time, Jim kept himself busy outside of work. In the early 1970s, he refereed junior varsity football in Monroe County, NY. He was also an avid amateur ham operator – WA2IRT. In the 1980s Jim became first a NYS EMT with Union Hill Fire Department, NY and then as a paramedic. He was one of four paramedics that established the Monroe County NE Quadrant Paramedic Squad which also served Xerox Corporation. All this was volunteer. In the 1980s Jim qualified and joined the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, supporting Lake Ontario and Sodus Bay, NY. Over the years he put his boats, progressively becoming bigger and bigger, to good use. This was a volunteer activity for search and rescue.
Jim was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jayne Maccabe, together for 49 years; by his sons: James S. Lannom (Amy and their family) of Florida and Thomas W. Lannom (Samantha) and Jim’s two grandsons: Thomas K. Lannom and Francis M. Lannom of Washington State; as well as his brother Ward Lannom (Angela) and their family; also his sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Christine and Martin Tully of Toronto, Canada.
He is sorely missed.
