Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Jim and his family moved to California’s San Fernando Valley when he was nine months old. He was the oldest of five children. He attended Monlux and Coldwater Canyon Elementary Schools, Sun Valley Junior High School, and North Hollywood High School. He graduated from San Fernando Valley State College (now CSU Northridge) in 1964 with a degree in electrical engineering.
Jim worked at Los Angeles DWP and enjoyed telling of how he once did electrical work on Bob Hope's putting green. He eventually retired from San Diego Gas & Electric in 2006, where he was a power contracts administrator.
Jim has always enjoyed volunteer activities. Even as a youngster he volunteered to raise the flag daily at his elementary school. In junior high he volunteered in the lunchroom, served on the projector crew that set up and ran 16mm movies in classrooms, and worked on the stagehand crew for large school productions. As an adult, he served faithfully at Church of the Good Shepherd as a Vestry member, Head Usher, Chalice Bearer and Lector. He also served as a Charter Representative to the Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop for the church. A devoted father, Jim also served as an assistant coach for his kids' various sports teams. In retirement, he became very active in the Kiwanis Club of Bonita, where he served as President and Secretary and was the Kiwanis representative to the San Diego School of Performing Arts Key Club. He also enjoyed serving in the Bonita Senior Volunteer Patrol and was a member of the Sweetwater Valley Civic Association.
Jim met Patricia Love at a church youth group. They married and celebrated 62 wonderful years together. They lived in Van Nuys, Saugus, and Valencia, CA. They moved to Bonita in 1979, and in 2021 they moved to the Covenant Living at Mt. Miguel retirement community in Spring Valley, CA, where they continued to enjoy many activities in addition to traveling.
Jim was the ever-supportive “wind beneath our wings” to Pat and their children. Jim is survived by his wife, Pat, and children, Stephanie Woodford de Vos (David) and Bruce Woodford (Gina), as well as grandchildren Amanda de Vos, Abby de Vos Mazzagatte (Tyler), and Andrew & Daphne Woodford. He was predeceased by his son, Douglas Allan Woodford and sister Karen Brooks. He is survived by his siblings Bill, Tom, and Kathleen.
