Yesterday we reminisced on the visit Dad & Mom made to Hawaii for Megan’s HS graduation.  My folks had an unforgettable evening with them in Waikiki.  We laughed so hard, we cried. Sachiko looked tired of  the walk & Ron asked if she wanted a ride on his skooter? She burst into laughter and tears rolled down her cheeks; everyone burst into laughter seeing her tickled to the moon! It was wonderful witnessing Mom’s laughter at Dad’s corny/inside jokes on many occasions! They communicated in a private language❤️ Great memories!

When Dad was stationed on the USS Midway, he would let me come onto the ship when he had duty and they had movie night in the Chief's mess hall.  I would be sitting there in the Chief's mess hall watchin a movie and he usually found some type of ice cream for me to eat.    Good times, he was always fond of sweets and ice cream..  Guess that's where I get it from  :)



My dad used to take me and my brother along to wash his car. Usually on a Sunday,it was a ride  to the car wash where my brother and I would do all the work. I remember it being a chore but I knew my dad  would buy soda’s after all was complete. I’m sure now it was a way for him to be with his sons for a short time during his busy week

My favorite memory was the day we received a kimono in the mail from Grandpa & Grammy for Megan to wear for the YMCA Christmas parade float themed  “Children Around the World”.
It was a beautifully wrapped box with many different pieces to the kimono, to include the wooden slippers and socks.  They also sent a picture book (in Japanese) to help me put it all together, just right.  I had to call Grandpa to ask for more details to layer the slip & tie the obo... Megan looked so beautiful! I had professional pictures made to proudly share her heritage.
It was pointed out several years later, by Mrs. Murial Onishi, that I had crossed over the kimono fold on the opposite side of her chest, which apparently indicated a sign of mourning... but neither Grandpa or Grammy ever mentioned my mistake❤️

Most fond memory of Grandpa was spending a summer together building a model aircraft carrier when I was six years old. I can still picture it to this day. It looked awesome. Grammy and Grandpa kept me company that summer while Megan was in the hospital for her surgery. 

One souvenir  will always comfort me are the moments I would share with my dad on visits to  the USS Excel.  My mom would have me deliver his dinner  on duty nights. I was  ten years old. I would say today  a ten mile walk. More to the reality a measured mile. I hold dear the adventure I felt for the checker games, movies and secret  explorations  once I touched down on the ships deck. My father would grandstand me  aboard as the best ten year old checkers player. I dont think I dissapointed him.  Fascinated, captivated are the words I  use now.  Ten year old spending time with his father,  just plain cool. Thanks Dad. 

I remember the times you helped us make kites out of newspaper and wooden sticks...would have been much easier to buy the darn thing.  We never had any confidence that heap of glue, string, and musty newspaper would get two feet off the ground but it did and more! 

We watched our son and his wife fly their kite today, brought back a lot of memories. Hope you’re flying that musty newspaper over the rainbow. 

Grandpa, 

I can’t recall what age I was in this photo but I can still feel the love and protectiveness you had. Not just with me, but your whole family. 

I will never forget how much time and effort you put into our “candy bags” to take home after a visit. Filled with money, candy and books. Your three essential items. I’m going to miss that dearly! I’m going to miss all of it. 

One of my favorite memories with you is when you lost me at Disneyland. You knew exactly where to find me when everyone else wondered where I was! No one said anything, though. But we all knew it was you. You bought me and ice cream right after (probably out of guilt). To this day we still laugh about it, we knew you didn’t mean to. 

Grandpa, I miss you so much. Although I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye, I know you’re looking down on all us from Heaven. Thank you for everything you did for me, and what you’ll continue to do from above. I love you so much! Rest In Peace.

  My brother, John Ward Kure, of Chula Vista, CA passed away June 8, 2020.
  John was born December 20, 1939 at White Salmon, WA.  He was raised at Lyle, WA helping on the family farm.  He attended school there until the family moved to DeLake, OR (now Lincoln City, OR) in 1957.
   He loved to read.  One of my memories is of him with a paperback book in his back pocket whether herding cattle or baling hay.  That joy never ended.
   He graduated from Taft High School in 1958 and promptly joined the United States Navy.  He wanted to see the world and he did just that for 30 plus years.
  He married the love of his life in 1962 in Japan and together they moved their family where ever the Navy sent them.
  He is preceded in death by parents, Hildor H. Kure of Lincoln City, OR and Helen Ward Kure of Boise, ID.
  John is survived by his wife Sachiko of 58 years; sister Corrine (Bert) Smith, Boise, ID; Sons Kohji (LIsa) Harker Heights, TX, Lawrence (Yolonda) Chula Vista, CA, David (Marie) Henderson, NV,  six very, very special Grandchildren and one Great Grandchild.
  You have left a hole in all our hearts and we will miss you.  May you rest in peace.
