Josefina Goingo Gonong, lovingly known as Mom, Majo, Auntie Josie and Tita/Mama Nene, peacefully passed away at the age of 80 while holding her loving husband's hand, on May 14, 2025, in Chula Vista, California. Born on July 19, 1944, in Bicol, Philippines, Josefina's vibrant spirit and boundless kindness touched countless lives across two countries.
Graduating from the University of the East in the Philippines, she began her professional journey as an elementary school teacher. At the age of 24, Josefina courageously moved to the United States, joining the love of her life, Santos Costales Gonong. Their remarkable union endured nearly 57 beautiful years - most of which they lived in their family home in Imperial Beach, California.
Josefina's unwavering integrity, loving compassion, and caring generosity were apparent to all she encountered. Her home was always open, warmly welcoming her children's friends and active-duty military members stationed in San Diego, offering shelter, hearty meals, and heartfelt camaraderie. Known as a genuine soul, Josefina never hid her feelings and deeply cherished human connections. She possessed a joyful sense of humor, often amusing others with playful, colorful jokes, always aiming to uplift those around her. As a talented creative artist and meticulous seamstress, Josefina proudly crafted cherished items—from matching outfits for her young daughters and herself, to her youngest daughter's elegantly detailed wedding dress. Her creative passion extended into making beautiful jewelry for friends, family, and beloved medical professionals.
She was a devoted mother of three—Darlene Gonong Larson (John L. Larson), Wendy Burton (Darius Vanlandingham), and Santos Jason Gonong; grandmother of Sabrina Lynn Burton and Michael Burton Jr. (Sierra Burton); and loving great-grandmother to Scarlett and newborn Persephone. She is also survived by her eldest sister, Amparo Goingo Javier, and dozens of nieces and nephews.
Services celebrating Josefina's rich and compassionate life will take place on Friday, May 30, at Glen Abbey Mortuary's Chapel of the Roses in Bonita, California, from 4pm-8pm, with the rosary at 5pm and prayer service at 6pm.
Josefina's warm laughter, abundant generosity, and passionate love for her family—in the USA, Philippines and around the world—will live forever in the hearts of those she touched.
