Juan Quenga San Nicolas, also known as John, was born on June 21, 1942 to Jose Atao San Nicolas and Delores Cruz Quenga San Nicolas on the island of Guam, in the village of Piti. He is the oldest of three; his brothers are Joseph Quenga San Nicolas (deceased) and Ramon Quenga San Nicolas. He graduated from George Washington High School in1962.
At a San Vicente party, in Agat, Guam, while helping mix shrimp patties, all it took was one look, and he met the love of his life, Alfonsina Carbullido Charfauros. They were married on February 16, 1963 at Camp Rojas Church in between their two villages in Guam. On March 9, 1964, Joanna Rose, was the first of 8 children. Within a four year time frame, they were blessed with four more children, Doris Marie, Betty Ann, their first son, Jose, and Dianna Christine (Tina). They then moved to the mainland and resided in California where his second son was born, John Manuel, and then Sylvia Patrice. Ten years later, on Christmas morning their youngest Alfonsina Manuela (Allie) came as a gift to them all.
Nine months later he became a grandfather to Rochelle Marie. Two years later, another granddaughter Vanessa Nicole was born. Four years after that, Elizabeth Manuela Sharbak, then a year later Saber Manuel Sharbak, followed by Dominique & Leiahna Marie were the next additions. Six years later, Isabella Rose Di Giulio and a year after Regina Lynn Burns were born. Finally, the youngest of the 9, Anthony Troy (Nono) Di Giulio completed the grandkids. He was then blessed with his first great grand-child Rihanna Jade Hernandez.
John accepted a position as a janitor to get his foot in the door of a successful company and support his family from the move to California. While he was a janitor at San Diego Gas and Electric Company, his supervisors saw the value and quality of his work, and decided to promote and train him as a welder. He was then promoted to Foreman for the Gas Distribution Division. He retired at the age of 56. His coworkers enjoyed working with him, giving him the nickname Sammy.
When he wasn’t working, and after retirement, he enjoyed fishing off the pier, attending the fiestas, going to the casinos, and supporting various Chamorro club fundraisers. He also enjoyed going to senior events at the Sons and Daughters of Guam Club where he played poker, ate, and danced. On Friday nights, after playing in the bowling league, he would play cards with his buddies all weekend long. When he was not out with friends, he mostly enjoyed spending time with his family, barbequing, playing also known as irritating the grandkids, or watching Starship Troopers with his grandson Anthony. Most of all he loved it when his entire family got together for special occasions. He and his wife were voted Rai and Raina (King and Queen) by peers at the Sons and Daughters of Guam Club in 2008.
He traveled to Hawaii where he was reunited with his only living brother Ramon San Nicolas. His brother took him sightseeing around the island and created memories as well as reminiscing on memories growing up on the island of Guam. He enjoyed his stay out there and had planned on visiting again with his entire family.
He was truly a family man, was always there for his kids and grandkids. He was able to walk four of his daughters down the aisle. The first was Joanna Rose who married Joseph C. Fontanilla. Then, Doris Marie who married Saber Abu Sharbak (divorced). Next was Betty Ann who married Romero San Agustin (divorced) and finally Dianna Christine married Keith Di Giulio. John opened his home to friends and family who needed a place to stay. He was a joker, a prankster, and an all-around funny man.
Although he had health issues towards the latter years of his life, he still led a full and very happy life. He will truly be missed and will always be loved by his family and friends.
