

His father served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany, while Jack grew up in Duncan Oklahoma with his mother. Jack attended Duncan High School, where he was a member of the wrestling team, played bass clarinet in the Duncan High School marching band and played saxophone in his high school jazz band called “The Flame”. Summers were spent as a lifeguard at the local pool.
After graduating High School in 1958, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and after going through boot camp at the U.S. Naval Training Center in San Diego, Ca, he was transferred to Groton, CT. to attend submarine school. After graduating from submarine school on January 14, 1959, he was transferred to San Diego, Ca. While in San Diego, he met Idele Patterson and on January 14,1961 they were married. During his time in San Diego, he served on the submarines the USS Redfish, the USS Blueback and the USS Permit.
In 1970, Jack was commissioned to Warrant Officer and transferred back to Groton, CT. During his evenings he sang with the Sun Harbor Barbershop Chorus. In 1973 he was promoted to Lieutenant JG and in 1975 he was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to Naval Support Activity Mid-South, Trident Detachment, in Millington, TN to serve on the Admiral's Staff. In 1976, Jack was transferred back to Groton, CT. Between shore duty and submarines, Jack took evening classes and earned an Associates in Science degree from Mohegan Community College in Norwich, CT. In total, his Naval career spanned over twenty years in submarines, deep submergence vehicles, underwater demolition, and intelligence.
In 1978 Jack retired from the military and he and his family returned to California to settle in Chula Vista. He then began working in the aerospace and electronic industry. He was a technical writer, a publications manager, a program manager, an integrated logistics manager, a reliability and maintainability manager, a logistics specialist and logistics engineer. In his spare time he earned a Bachelors in Liberal Arts and Sciences in Industrial Organizational Psychology from San Diego State University. He finished his career as a Senior Logistics Analyst for AT&T at SPAWAR in San Diego in 2008; In 2012 he joined the Chula Vista Senior Patrol and officially retired in 2016.
Jack is survived by his wife, Idele, his daughters Kimberlie Sontag and Kristine Huostila and grandchildren Victoria Mausten, Mikael and Aidan Huostila.
A memorial service will be held with full Military honors in the future for Lt. Alvin Jack Sontag at Miramar National Cemetery, in San Diego, CA
