Luz Barrera Arias was born on January 11, 1929, in Caridad, Cavite, Philippines, to parents Jose Barrera and Josefa Fernandez Barrera. She is 9 of 10 brothers and sisters all of whom predeceased her and are as follows: Gantinpala, Adriano, Benjamin, Justiniano, Jose, Neftali, Estrella, Soledad and Ramona. Luz graduated with a Teacher’s Degree from Philippine Normal College and commenced her educator profession at various elementary schools throughout the Philippines and continued as a Teacher’s
Assistant throughout the West Coast of the United States. She was an Educator for nearly 20 years. She retired in her sixties in San Diego, California as a Home Healthcare Supervisor when Luz decided to change professions upon her arrival in San Diego, California, with her life long love, Manuel M. Arias, the "Boy Next Door" growing up, who she eventually married on June 15, 1960, and who became a 20+ year U.S. Navy Veteran. Luz and Manuel remained happily married for 58 years! They are survived by their one and only daughter from their marriage, Marilu, with two grandchildren Gregory and Kayla and Son-in-Law,
Michael, who she all loved whole heartedly. Not only was Luz a loving wife, loving mother, loving grandmother and loving sister, caring for her loved ones unconditionally, she also loved the Lord and was a dedicated parishioner at The 32nd Street Naval Base Chapel for many years, wherein she would spend almost every Sunday, dedicating herself to the Lord and growing in his love. Luz had a passion for cooking, specially Filipino delicacies, which she was a master. Her family and friends would testify to her mastery as a chef as her signature dishes like "Pancit" was always a family favorite and will be missed at family gatherings! While her time with us was unexpectedly cut short on the morning of October 27, 2018, Luz’s legacy will carry on, both seen and unseen. Our love for her will continue to grow in her absence; she will be profoundly missed by all who loved her and have come to know her kindness and generosity. Rest in Peace and our Love goes with you.
