

Luz Vidal Gavieres, age 90, died after a sudden illness on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. She is survived by her son, Ruben (wife – Alicia); two grandchildren – Christopher (wife – Brittany) and Sarah (husband – Aidan); and a great granddaughter, Emilia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar, and her grandson, Joseph.
Luz was born on July 6, 1934, in Silang, Cavite, Philippines. She was one of ten children born to Eduardo and Inez Vidal. Her siblings Amada, Leonora, Cristeta, Antonia, Elpedia, Luisa, and Virgilio are also deceased. Luz has two surviving sisters – Virginia lives in the Philippines and Segundina resides in Chicago.
Luz attended the Philippine College of Commerce (PCC, now the Polytechnic University of the Philippines) where she was crowned Miss PCC of 1956-57 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Education. She then taught Retail Merchandising at Villamor High School in Manila and served as the Secretary of the Manila Public School Vocational Teachers Association.
Luz married the love of her life, Oscar Gavieres, on June 3, 1961. Through Oscar’s US Navy service, the two of them lived in Hawaii and Japan (where Ruben was born) before settling in San Diego in 1968. In addition to teaching, Luz enjoyed successful careers as a bookkeeper and as a real estate agent. Luz’s family will fondly remember her for her devout Catholic faith, generous heart, love of gardening, and how she tried to bring a smile to everyone she met.
