

Maria Castanon, 85, of San Diego, passed away on July 27, 2026, in her home under the care of her family. She was born on October 13, 1940, in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico. Her parents, Jesus Herrera and Maria del Carmen Marquez, soon moved their young family to Tijuana, Mexico. Due to the untimely death of her father, she was raised by her grandmother, Gabriela Hernandez, and her mother.
She married Isidro L. Castanon on July 1, 1961, and they lived in Los Angeles for 10 years before moving to San Diego. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years and her four children: Jackie Kelley of Imperial Beach, Adriana Collins of San Diego, Carmen Castanon of San Diego and Mari Herrera of Chula Vista. She is also survived by her grandson, Andre Mares and two sons-in-law, Tim Kelley and Alan Mares. She is predeceased by her daughter Sandra Castanon and her brother Jesus Herrera and her sister Yolanda Herrera.
Maria enjoyed crocheting blankets and scarves and loved painting portraits and flowers. She also enjoyed decorating her home. And she loved dancing at family and social occasions. She spent many joyful hours watching classic cinema, especially comedies starring Laurel and Hardy. She also liked watching musicals or any movie by Cantinflas in her native Spanish.
