Patricio L Magallano Jr. was born on May 9, 1938. He was called “Dayunyor”, Junior, Jun, Uncle Jun, Pat, but affectionately called by his wife and children as Papa or Pa. He was born in San Roque, Cavite City, Philippines, or “PN” as commonly called by Caviteños. Papa’s parents were Emilia Saturnino Luna from Pasquin, Ilocos Norte and Patricio Cabello Magallano from Maribuhok, Bohol, Philippines. Both parents were employees in the US Navy Base in Sangley Point, Philippines. They met, fell in love and had a son they named Patricio Jr.
Patricio Jr grew up in Cavite City, returning only to the Pasuquin province to visit relatives from mother Emelia’s side of the family. Junior has two younger siblings, Caridad (Auntie Wi) and Francisco (Uncle Franke), as we fondly call them. He was a young boy with an adventurous spirit. He loved going to the beach. At that early age, he learned to earn money by selling “sampaguita” leis. He also sold Pan-de-Sal and shined shoes for the sailors.
Of course, he went to school during the day. He jumps-up-and-down when he received the “pasang awa” a passing grade of 75%!
He dreamed of becoming an actor. He also dreamed of becoming a Doctor. On December 30, 1957, Junior spent New Year’s Eve locked-up on-base with new recruits, and he was leaving for Recruit Training Center San Diego, California via Treasure Island, California.
Patricio Jr started a new life in the United States. He never forgot a 14 year old girl he met when he was a young boy visiting relatives in Ilocos Norte. That girl was Restie Que, and they married in 1964. Papa is a Vietnam War Veteran too. By 1966, when Pa transferred to the US East coast did he and mama Restie start living together. In a span of 4 years, Bobby, Odette and Ron were born. With Papa - mama Restie, Bobby, Odette and Ron travelled half-way around the world.
With only a High School diploma, Patricio Jr climbed the navy military rates. Having reached the rate of Senior Chief, he honorably served his country for over 28 years. He also worked for 18 years as a Government Civilian Employee and Contractor with Military Sealift Command. For 18 years, he never missed a trip. He enjoyed and loved the job. In 2007, he retired, and settled down with mama Restie in Chula Vista, California. They stayed married for 58 years, and they their family together.
He loved watching movies. He always had a smile on his face even in times of hardship. He would smile and joke around as a method to distract from harsh realities. He was a responsible man, and a dutiful husband and father.
His greatest achievements were his three children – Bobby, Odette and Ron. He is survived by wife Restie, son-in-law – Jim, daughters-in-law Beth and Sarah, grandchildren – James, Jamie, Joseph, Stefani and Patrick, and great-grandchildren Declan and Sailor.
We miss him. We lay him now to rest by stating his favorite lines to us who know him best, “I know you like it”, and “I love you no “shit.”
We love you too, no “shit” Pa.
