Paulita Barrios de Guia, our beloved centenarian, passed away peacefully October 21, 2020 in the comfort of her own home surrounded by loved ones. A full life filled with love, compassion, and servitude, she lived to be 100 years old. Paulita is survived by her 9 children, Alma Luz, Ladie Lou, Amor, Fidel Jr., Grace, Veronica, Reynante, Chris, and Alma May and will be reunited with her deceased child, Ernie and deceased husband, Fidel Sr; plus 24 grandchildren (2 deceased), 41 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren. All of these she loved and touched deeply. Paulita was the last to survive from her generation, both on her and her husband’s sides.
From a young age, she had a personal and deep connection with God and would live life through Him. She was born and raised in the Philippines where she lived a humbled life and survived World War II. As a single widowed mother, she moved to the United states in 1983 for a better life for her children. Her strength came from her strong faith in God and the love for her family. She became the rock and glue that held the family together. Apart from her battling diabetes, heart disease and aneurysm, she outlived all of those with grace and strong faith in God. She built a long lasting and deep relationship with the Catholic community of St. Michael Catholic Church, San Diego and was beloved by her community. Paulita loved them in return.
Paulita was always smiling, always happy, always kind and always worry free. Anyone who had the opportunity to know Paulita can see God’s grace shine through her. We all felt her holy presence when she was near and her smile and laugh could light up the darkest room. She emitted a beautiful radiance and divine glow with a heart so pure and good that we will always remember.
Of the many things Paulita loved, she loved to serve the Lord by attending mass regularly, weekly novena night masses and praying the rosary every day. Her favorite color was yellow and her favorite flowers were roses and sampaguita (jasmine). Paulita loved watching the popular television soap opera series: The Young and Restless, Bold and Beautiful, and As the World Turns. Later in her life, she enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She loved poems and with her brilliant memory would recite them even during the last weeks of her life.
Paulita would always remind her love ones the following saying before they left her house:
“God be with you. Take care. Drive Safely. Go home happy. And remember: We love you very, very much.”
We love you very, very much to our beloved and beautiful mom, grandma, great grandma, great great grandma, friend, and our healer. God be with you and rest in peace, Paulita. Always on our minds, Forever in our hearts.
