Peter Johnson

Peter Christopher Johnson was born on April 12th, 1956 in Corona, CA. He moved to Coronado, CA at age 3 and has been connected ever since. He passed away peacefully in his home on June 21st, 2022 with his two daughters, Delaney and Audrey Johnson, as well as accompanied by his sister, Margaret Anne Johnson.

Peter, also known by ‘Pj’, lived a fascinating life filled with adventure and exploration. He began shaping surfboards in high school and started working as a surfboard shaper at Duray’s in the early 1970’s. This is where his love for surfboard shaping and surfing blossomed. He went on to establish his very own surfboard manufacturing brands; Kane Garden Surfboards and Delray Surfboard Designs in San Diego, CA.

His roots as a surfer and businessman came from his time working at the Chart House both in Hawaii and in San Diego. He worked his way up to become general manager for the Oceanside Charthouse. In total, Peter worked at 10 different locations. He assisted in opening several locations throughout the Islands of Hawaii and on the mainland.

In 1996, he started working for Rusty Surfboards as a general manager at Rusty’s factory and 2 Rusty surf shops. He worked there for 10 years, designing and manufacturing wakeboards that sold out faster than they could be produced.

Not only was Peter a master surfboard shaper, but he was an incredibly talented musician as well, performing in ‘The Southern Tide’ country folk band. In 2000, the band hit the top charts, and quickly rose to become a #1 hit for the country charts.

Besides all of Peter’s accomplishments throughout his life, he will mostly be remembered for his compassion, kindness, and bravery. After losing his beloved wife Cynthia, he took on the role as both the mom and the dad in order to raise his two daughters. He is survived by his two daughters, Delaney and Audrey, and sisters Margaret, Betsy, Patti, Virginia, Georgia, and brother Bruce.
