Phillip Casimiro Magpoc was born on February 11, 1946 to Gregorio and Loreto Magpoc in Bataan, Philippines. Phillip was the 5th of 9 children and was the first son of Gregorio and Loreto. At 4 months old, the family moved to Subic Bay where he lived until he joined the United States Navy in 1965 at the young age of 19. Phillip’s decision to join the Navy was to provide for his family and eventually help them immigrate to the United States.
Phillip served as a Personnelman aboard the aircraft carriers USS Kearsarge and USS Coral Sea during his first few years. While assigned to the Kearsarge, Phillip and his fellow crew members were dispatched to the South China Sea off the coast of Vietnam to assist and protect the 7th Fleet during the Vietnam War. During one of their visits to the Philippines, a shipmate, Lori Vicente, introduced Phillip to his niece, Concesa Vicente Quitoriano, in 1967. Phillip and Concesa were married in the Philippines on January 10, 1971.
Phillip was stationed to sea duty at Port Hueneme in 1974. At this time, Concesa came to the United States and joined Phillip in Oxnard. Phillip and Concesa settled into their life together and on his 29th birthday in 1975, Concesa gave him the best birthday gift; the birth of their first child, Christine. Three years later, Phillip and Concesa had their second child, Charise.
In 1979, Phillip was stationed to San Diego. They found their forever home in Chula Vista. In November of 1980, Concesa gave birth to their only son, Jason Phillip. Phillip finished his military career in San Diego as a Chief Petty Officer in 1986 after serving the United States Navy for 21 years.
Over the course of Phillip’s life in the United States, he served his family by sponsoring the immigration of his siblings, his wife’s parents and siblings, and nearly a dozen nieces and nephews. Phillip was an active member of the community as a parishioner of Most Precious Blood Catholic Church and long time board member and President of the Subic Association of San Diego.
After his naval retirement, Phillip was a CACI contractor for 2 years and then initiated federal employment with SPAWAR where he served as a Security Specialist, interviewing and granting security clearance to employees for 25 years.
After his federal retirement, Phillip enjoyed spending his free days chauffeuring his wife, spending time and cooking for his family, watching movies and going to his favorite amusement park- Barona Casino.
Phillip is survived by his wife Concesa, daughters Christine and Charise, and grandchildren Kaela Jade, Colin Michael, Siena Grace, Kaia Charlise, Joseph Kai, and Isabella Kiana.
