If you’re about to complain about hardship or particular situations in your life, stop. Let’s reflect on Phoutthana William Sphabmixay, most of you know him as “Mack” whose star shined the brightest for everyone he came into contact with. Just 38, after leaving a piece of his light on all the lives he touched, his star departed to the next journey at 1:16PM, on Thursday, April 23rd, 2020 at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Diego, CA.
Mack, a highly driven design engineer, gifted videographer, enthused traveler, adventurous foodie, huge movie buff, devoted husband, awesome father, loving son, brother, uncle and friend; he embodied the spirit of all that is good. Mack was born on August 26, 1981 at a refugee camp in Nong Khai province, Thailand to Kongmany and Simmalavanh (Kongraskhoth) Sphabmixay. It didn’t take long before Kongmany and Simmalavanh decided to migrate to America. In 1982, Mack settled with his family in Nashville, Tennessee. In the next couple of years, the family moved to Banning, CA. Here, Mack completed secondary school, got his first job as a retail associate at Van Heusen at Cabazon Outlets and later graduated from Banning High in 2000. Shortly after graduation, Mack moved to San Diego, to embark in a new chapter in his life.
Mack held many jobs. He worked for companies like Motorola, County of San Diego, Coastal Communications, Serco, and eventually SAIC for the past few years. Mack received his associate degree from ITT Tech in 2003 kicking off his career as a CAD Designer then his bachelor’s degree from the Arts Institute of California in 2011. While working at the County of San Diego, Mack met the love of his life, Jovanna Delgado Sphabmixay. Five years later on their dating anniversary, they wed on July 26th, 2008. On November 26th, 2011, they welcomed their first son, Aiden Ang Sphabmixay. Years later, welcomed another son, on June 26th, 2018, Liam Zuko Sphabmixay.
In his words, “nerd by choice”. Those who know him, knows he loved attending Comic Con. Even making amends with his wife to celebrate their wedding anniversary before or after comic con week. Mack loved shows like Game of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy, Avatar the Last Airbender, hence naming his sons “Ang” and “Zuko”. Mack enjoyed the finer whiskeys, craft beers, yakitori, tasty ramens, saucy seafood boils and quality steak. Family camping, road trips, exploring new territories, Mack was a true adventurer and traveler at heart. You never had to worry when traveling with Mack because he would have researched and planned for the best places to stay, best eateries at the given location and best sights to see.
In his short time on this earth, Mack’s selfless nature inspired many lives. If there was a problem that needed a solution, you can count on Mack to help solve it objectively. He always asked the toughest questions that made you think critically. He was always fair and honest in his opinions and counsel, refusing to hold your hand so you can learn your lesson. He always pushed you to strive for more and never settling for less. His successes fueled motivation in others. From being a groomsman in your wedding to celebrating your graduation, simple gatherings to worldly adventures, or helping you make your first adult purchases. Mack was consistently present in his family and friends’ biggest moments. Most importantly, Mack was the best provider and supporter to his family. His smile was contagious, and his laughter will have you cracking up alongside him. Mack taught us to never give up and never to give in. He was a fighter until the end. We will miss him immensely.
Mack is survived by his father Kongmany, mother Simmalavanh, wife Jovanna, his two sons Aiden Ang and Liam Zuko, his brother David, sister Lana, and several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. We love you Mack. May you rest in peace.
