Raul was born on August 8, 1949 in Echague, Isabela, Philippines to Antonio dela Cueva, First Lieutenant in the United States Army and Rosenda Cauilan, a housewife. He had 7 siblings (2 Sisters, Estrelita and Hilda, and 5 Brothers, Rene, Steve, Rudy, Nelson, and Carl). He graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Hilo, Hawaii in 1967. He joined the United States Navy in 1969. Raul served in the Navy for 24 years attaining the distinction of Master Chief in less than 16 years, which is attributed to his unfailing work ethic. He graduated from National University with a degree in Accounting, Cum Laude. This degree enabled him to work for the Department of Defense in the Accounting Field for over 10 years.
When his ship the USS Niagara Falls was stationed in the Philippines, he met Maria Paz, the love of his life, and married her on March 24,1974. While stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii Raul and Maria Paz welcomed 2 children into their home, Jennifer and Christopher. Later he unofficially adopted Kenneth into his home. Raul set about teaching them the importance of working hard and getting a good education. His children remember him as a funny, kind, hard working father who encouraged them to pursue their goals.
Raul was a natural leader and teacher. Through his patience he was able to teach many people the joys of singing, dancing, and faith in the lord. Raul was a generous man who loved helping others less fortunate than him. He was a positive role model teaching others to live as Christ did. He volunteered his time at the Church of the Most Precious Blood, being a parishioner for over 35 years. He spent his time Feeding the Homeless, Singing in the Church Choir, Teaching classes for RCIA, was a Knight of Columbus, part of the Ministry of Consolation, and was a Eucharistic Minister who visited people who were housebound and sick with his wife. His faith also guided him to volunteer his time as a Sharp Hospice Worker, learning and delivering the Healing Touch. He dedicated his life in the service of others.
