I remember uncle guero taking me and jauqiun to work with him , tasting all the fresh strawberries fresh produce as he picked it up ... use to LOVE going to the Blancos to run around play video games get yelled at in Spanish and English mixed chased with a belt by uncle guero . Will always remember the best carne Asada , menudo , salsa, breakfast after Christmas Eve he taught me how to eat jalapeños at a young age !!

     I could write a novel about all the wonderful memories I have of my Uncle Rene.  All my best childhood memories center around the innumerable weekends, school breaks, and holidays I spent with my Blanco family.  I have always felt like one of the kids and love being referred to as the 4th daughter.  
     Like others have shared, Uncle Wedo had an incredible vocabulary and liked to use it often just to see our reaction. I learned all my Spanish curse words from him. He had a way of making you think you were in trouble and then he would chuckle and we knew we got away with being naughty once again. 
The funniest time was when Dee Dee and I got into the ice, in the middle of the night, to make snow cones.  We got the big bag of ice out, made our snow cones and proceeded to enjoy them immensely. When it came time to put the bag of ice back in the freezer, we could not get it to fit so our Nana Sara came to the rescue.  While she was shoving the ice back in, Uncle Wedo woke up and started with the "ey hijole @#$($)%*,  Mary". And there was our Nana, holding the bag.  Uncle Wedo, said, "Oh Sara, I thought it was the girls". Dee Dee and I were peeking around the corner, with eyes the size of saucers, it was a close call. 
      In all the years that I was naughty with my Blanco siblings, Uncle Wedo, never once punished us, even though we really deserved it.  Heck, I even messed up his car on the way to Aunt Martha's to go swimming and ended up with a huge dent along the side.
Uncle Wedo also made the most incredible Spanish rice. After he gave me the secret recipe and taught me to make it correctly, I would bring it to church potlucks and everyone would rave about Uncle Wedo's rice.  Our pastor moved away and one day his wife called me,  from Washington state, wanting to know why she couldn't find Uncle Wedo's rice at the store.  She had, after all, visited several stores and could only find Uncle Ben.  It was that good.

I will always be grateful for everything Aunt Rosie and Tio Rene did for my mother and I when I was a toddler.

I lived with my grandparents from the age of eight to eighteen years old.
I recall Tio Rene coming over to the house every Saturday morning and Nana Lola would cook him breakfast. Tio would always catch me reading the Agua Caliente Racing Form. Tio would always get upset and tell Tata to quit taking me to the racetrack every weekend. I always told Tio the racing form helped me with my math at school.

I always looked forward to spending the night at Aunt Rosie and Tio Rene’s house on Mariposa Circle. It was always a warm welcome, I loved hanging out with my cousins and the food was always awesome.

I will dearly miss my Tio Rene and send my condolences to my Aunt Rosie and all my cousins, Frankie, Deedee, Joey, Sara and Joaquin.

I was talking to my aunt Ivy last night.  She was fondly remembering Wedo’s kindness, friendliness and warmth when she would see him at Fed Mart.  I never knew he ran the produce section at Fed Mart.  

 I remember being at the Blanco's and Wedo’s Mexican cooking, especially the time of year when everyone would participate making tamales. I don’t know how Wedo learned to cook so gourmet, his recipes were delicious. He would also make beef jerky and hang the pieces on a string in the kitchen. He loved to share his cooking with family. I hope to get these recipes so that I can continue to enjoy his wonderful food with my family in the future.

I have such fond memories of my Tio Rene. I remember his laugh and the sparkle in his eye when he would tease my dad and brag about his menudo being better than my mom’s. His menudo was the best, hands down so he earned those bragging rights. 

He always made me feel loved and special, like a daughter. I remember that recliner, watching the ball games on TV and his threats with the belt to be quiet when Sara and I would talk and giggle all night. He was all talk because sometimes we were bad and that belt never touched us. 

I will never forget his 70th birthday party or the smile on his face from ear to ear when he and my dad were together at the ranch. What I will remember the most is how much he loved his family and the beautiful love that he and my Aunt Rose shared. It’s the kind of love everyone wants but few are blessed to have. I will never forget you Tio Rene. I love you!


I have very fond memories of my Uncle Wedo growing up...The holidays and his love of cooking, the recliner at the house on Mariposa and his love of sports, the warm and magnetic presence at all family events, and his love for his family.  

As a young adult, I had the opportunity to get some good tips from him before going to the Del Mar horse races and won $100....he took the time to advise me on which jockeys to pick and I was glad I listened!  

My favorite Uncle Wedo memory as an adult was having the privilege to attend his 70th birthday party and seeing how happy he was celebrating with family, listening to his favorite mariachi music, and taking family pictures..It was a special day for a truly special man.

We  loved visiting the Blancos as kids.  There was also something happening, it was a lot of fun!  Sometimes we would get loud and Wedo would yell out some things in Spanish.  Joaquin would translate.  We’d ask Joaquin, is he going to do something or come down here?  No, was the reply.  Then we’d proceed to play. As we’d get louder, again Wedo would yell out that he was going to get the belt.  This was always from the lazy boy chair, next to the fireplace in front of the TV watching baseball.  Joaquin knew just how to gage Wedo.  When Wedo would take off his belt and determinately walk towards the stairs with the belt in his right hand, that was the time to scatter away!
