

Father Rusty Monohan, the pastor of Saint Thomas Mission, died Sunday, April 23rd from terminal cancer after a short stay at Nazareth House. He had admirably served the parish of Saint Thomas Indian Mission for more than 27 years, and was the longest serving current pastor in the Diocese of San Diego.
Father Monohan was born on December 23, 1946, and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of San Diego on June 25, 1977. Father Monohan served as associate pastor at Saint Mary Magdalene, Good Shepherd, Saint Kieran, Saint Michael and Saint Pius X parishes. He was named pastor of Saint Thomas Indian Mission on August 1, 1989.
Fr. Rusty is survived by sisters, Ruth Johnston (Robert Johnston), Shirley Cowan (Roger Cowan), and his brother, Adrian Monohan. He is also survived by his many parishioners who were his family to him and love him so very very much. He is preceded in death by his Father, Adrian Monohan, Mother, Ruth Monohan, and brothers, Robin and Michael and his very best friend, Rev. Robert England.
The Funeral Mass will be on Monday, May 1st at Saint Pius X Parish, 1120 Cuyamaca Avenue, Chula Vista 91911 at 11:00 am. Bishop Robert McElroy will be the principal celebrant. Burial will be at Glen Abbey Cemetery, 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita. www.glenabbeysandiego.com.
In lieu of flowers, Fr. Rusty asked donations be made in his honor to St. Meinrad Seminary, 200 Hill Drive, St. Meinrad, IN 47577.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas Indian Mission at a later time.
