Rogelio – known to family and friends as “Sonny” – was born in San Narciso, Zambales, Philippines on November 5, 1941, to Paz and Benigno Fernandez. After graduating from Araneta University, he taught math at his old high school in San Narciso before starting a career working with naval ships at the U.S. Naval Base in Subic Bay.
Rogelio married Benita, his high school sweetheart, on June 27, 1970. They immigrated to the United States along with their five children and settled in Los Angeles. He and Benita were married for over 50 years until her passing in 2021.
Rogelio showed his love through action. He relished fatherhood and he was the supportive father his children could always count on. He fixed things around the house, helped his children move into their new homes, drove them to school, work, and the library, and was always ready with practical advice. He was endlessly curious and as an engineer at heart, he loved understanding how things worked. Rogelio found joy in gardening, growing his own food, cooking his favorite Ilocano dishes, singing, music and playing the piano.
In his later years, he returned to his beloved Philippines where he appreciated life’s simple pleasures: spending time with family, friends, and the family cat; strolling through the wet market in his hometown; listening to musicians at the mall; and chatting with neighbors and strangers alike wherever he went.
Rogelio is survived by his children, Rogel, Erwin, Ruby, Bryan, and Rachel, and his beloved grandchildren, Cayleigh, Anze, Sierra, and Damian.
