My brother, Romeo, was a great husband, father, brother and friend. He touched a lot of people with his kindness, generosity and unassuming ways. He loved his kids, grandchildren, sisters, friends and neighbors. In spite of what he was going through, you would never hear him complain about it, nor question God why he had to suffer when he was a good person who never did anything bad to anybody. 

Truly, he will be missed by a lot of people. Without him around, life will never be the same.

Dad... When I think of you I always know that you were one to look out for others and make sure everyone was okay. You would even ask your doctors and nurses how they were doing and find out their favorite snacks so you could bring some at your next appointment. If you didn't know their favorite you still brought them something... candy, cookies or crackers. 

You were always there to help and support my education, musical endeavors and other random ideas I'd come up with. In college, you helped me financially so I could go through grad school twice without worrying  about how I'd afford it. As a child, you would pick me up from school and sit at mom's house during my piano lessons then go all the way back home, all for a 30 minute lesson. You even got me a top of the line camcorder just because I told you I wanted to try out for a TV show and had to submit a video. Thank you for always being there for me.

Growing up I would always listen to you talk about your travels and adventures from the Navy and the way you explained everything was so exciting! It was fascinating how you could even recall the top hits during your travels. I was so happy to finally travel  and share my stories with you.  And because you helped me become a teacher, I now have time to explore the world just like you did.

I will really miss how you always made me feel safe whenever the world seemed scary. On 9/11 I went directly to your and sat for hours, listening to you explain why America was so great and how strong our military is. No matter how sick you were, you continued to ensure me that we were okay and protected. I will still try to go to you for guidance but it will be hard to not hear you tell me not to worry.

In time, I hope to find comfort in simple things that remind of you. Like, listening to Jimmy Hendrix or the Beegees, smelling CK one cologne, when I get told I eat very slow (just like you), when I sneeze loud like you, and when I see YOUR nose in my reflection. I'll miss you and never wanted you to go but I know you are in a better place now getting the VIP treatment you deserve. I love you so very much dad.

My wife and I were neighbors of Romeo and we frequently spoke with him as he got some exercise walking around Subol Court using a walker and helped by caregiver, Vincent.  He never expressed a negative thought and was a fan of the Padres and the Chargers.  He was always friendly and expressed concern for us and our family.  We saw the bus that came often to take him to dialysis treatment and bring him back later.  Although we knew he was suffering, we never heard complaints from him.  We were not surprised to hear of his humbleness, gentleness, and generosity toward others at the viewing and funeral service.  He was a great example of a dedicated Christian man. Although I didn't know much about you growing up, I heard alot about you. I remember every time I visited San Diego, Elaine would always take me to see you, even though it was through short conversation I enjoyed our talks and questions about the family. You would always ask about my mom and how she was doing. The one fond memory I had was when I visited around my birthday and you gave me a monetary gift as we were leaving your home. I tried to give it back but you refused and told me to enjoy my birthday. I want to thank you for your kindness and unselfishness, that has carried on to your children. My best moments in life has been when I am around them, it saddens me that I can't be there with them through this time. It also brings me great peace because you are no longer suffering and you are in a place where you can watch your family and be proud of what you taught them and how they carry it on. Even though I hardly saw you I can say I love you not only for you but for what you have brought into the world that I can call my family.

Romeo Romeo where for art thou Romeo? Uncle Romy and i had too many jokes for me to remember them all at once. Us watching TFC he couldn't see and I couldn't understand and then grandpa would yell at us about something that neither of us could understand! We sang lady gaga  he told me stories of the Navy and the Philippines and his corvette. We would just laugh and take each day as they came. He embraced me as family immediately, you know the friend with the parent you kinda wish was yours sometimes, he was that for me. He is the kindest man I have ever known. The proudest navy veteran I have ever met. And I am so proud to have been included in his wonderful family even though I stuck out like a sore thumb he would call me his other daughter and treated me as his own. He helped me be brave and leave what I have always known in the hopes of something better, just like he did. I will forever be grateful for him. My heart breaks knowing he is not here with us and I could not be there to celebrate his life with everyone. Thank you Gain family for letting me know and love and care for your dad and your brother. It was truly a blessing being  half of the oddest couple ever to hit the streets of balboa hospital.

Although, the time we spent together was very short it didn't take long to witness your kindness and wonderful sense of humor. It was evident that you were Elaine's father. I'll never forget the time I went with Danielle while she cared for you and you wanted to go to 7/11. There was a big jackpot in the lotto that week and you insisted on buying Danielle and me lotto tickets. Knowing how much you loved the casino, it was a classic Romeo move. I admired the love you had for your children, and through Elaine that love spreads to others. Your love, kindness and generosity will live on in the lives you've touched. I'll make sure to take care of Elaine for you and celebrate your memory every time we go to a casino together. May you rest in that luxurious casino paradise.

I'm very sorry for your loss Romeo. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I never thought I would be writing in your guest book. I truly miss you Dad. Your passing happened so quick. I still can not believe you are gone. There are so many questions I have for you Dad. I really hope you hear them when I talk to you. I will stay strong for all of us Dad. I have saved your old voicemail messages and plan to keep them and listen to them when I want to hear you. I will try to continue your legacy and treat everyone the way you treated them. You are a loved man by many people. Take care and please watch over us. Love you Dad.

Uncle Romy- As sad as I am to hear the news that you are no longer with us, I am happy that you are now living a pain-free life with no more finger sticks, insulin shots, or eye drops.  I have very fond memories of our one day together.  I was so impressed that you knew the name of each eye drop that you had to give yourself including how many drops and in which eye.  You were so happy to ride in the car and listen to the walrus station because you loved the oldies.  I remember truly enjoying your company and hearing your stories.  I also remember it pouring rain that day and being so worried about driving you home safely from La Jolla all the way down south.  Another fond memory I have is of when Elaine asked me to check on you at the front of the VA.  I was charge that day so I had a minute to walk out to the entrance.  Elaine was so worried about you because you might have missed your ride home.  You were fine but I thought it was so funny that you especially requested one of the sack lunches from the ED.  Just a measly little turkey sandwich but for whatever reason, you loved them.  I made a trip back to the unit and got you one and you were so happy.  Thanks for the few but great memories.  Your kids and grandkids will continue to live out your legacy and we will watch them emit your positive energy to the rest of the world.  Honored to have known you, Romy.  May you rest in paradise, wherever that may be.  <3
