Born September 2, 1943 in Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away peacefully in the presence of her husband Wayne L. Nelson, on October 2, 2026. She was the daughter of Agnes (Miller) Junkin of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Elijah Junkin of Little Rock, Arkansas. Sam's life was influenced by growing up in New Orleans, LA, where she graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School. She began her career at the phone company, then left there to begin a career in the federal Civil Service, working for Savings Bonds, SPRO, and ultimately, after moving to San Diego, completing her 30 years by retiring from the Naval Supply Center in San Diego in April, 1999.
She became an avid San Diego Padres fan and season ticket holder for 13 years. She joined the San Diego Madres where she assisted in raising funds for youth baseball.
In retirement, Sam dedicated her time to volunteering at the San Diego Zoo, where she contributed thousands of hours of service, especially at the apes exhibit, which held a special place in her heart.
About ten years ago, Sam was struck with mild cognitive impairment, inhibiting her ability to continue to pursue her interests. Her mild cognitive impairment progressed to late-stage Alzheimer's disease, which ultimately claimed her life.
Sammie J. Nelson will be remembered for her years of service, her love of baseball, and her dedication to helping others. She found joy in the things she loved and gave her time generously to her community. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband, family, and all who knew her.
