

She was born in Ozark, Alabama, September 30, 1943, to Lucile and Buford Gissendanner. She loved the Lord and always kept the Bible by her side. Shirley graduated from San Diego High School and earned a Bachelor Degree in Political Science/Journalism from San Diego State University (Class of 1968).
As a distinguished academic and political pundit, Shirley’s numerous accomplishments include, writing and narrating "The Dreadful Hour," with actor Cleavon Little (1939-1992; perhaps best known for his role as the sheriff in the classic Mel Brooks comedy, Blazing Saddles). "The Dreadful Hour," was an account of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, his funeral, and the reactions of those closest to him. She was a lecturer in Afro-American Studies in 1973 and she was the first black woman to drive a bus for the San Diego Transit. Furthermore, she ran against Jim Bates for the U.S. Congress in 1982 and she ran for State Assembly in 1984 where she defeated her illustrious opponent, football’s "Heisman Trophy" winner Mike Garrett, in the Republican primary contest. But, lost to the Democrat challenger. She also worked with former Congressman Duncan L. Hunter during the 1980’s. And finally, she spent over seventeen years passionately caring for Ms. Casey Latz as her nurse, confidant, and friend.
