Born on July 23, 1952 in Hayward, CA, she was the daughter of Jose A. Martinez and Angeline Bell. Sylvia M. Garcia attended Modesto High School where she would eventually attend school,
work part time and care for her younger brother and grandfather. Just an example of dedication and sacrifice she made in caring for others. Sylvia later went on to move to San Diego, CA in1970 shortly after her 18th birthday then getting married to Ruben S. Garcia on December 23,1970. During the 70’s, they had 3 children starting with Ruben James in 1972, Gary Luis in 1974, and Angelica Marie in 1976 and chose the home she resided in until her passing. Her choice for that house was also based on her best interest as a mother as the first choice was located in an area she felt wasn’t safe enough to raise her family. Seeing graffiti on neighborhood walls, she figured that her children would grow up possibly influenced by their surroundings. Another selfless
instinct to protect her children from the start. In 1986 she gave birth to their youngest son Raymond Angel Garcia.
Sylvia went on to earn her Cosmetology Lic cutting hair before moving on to work for Jerry Prince, The Eastlake Company, then The Chula Vista Elementary School District where she would retire. Beyond her professional achievements, she was a devout Christian attending her first church at Templo De La Cruz in Hayward, CA, then El Buen Pastor in Modesto, CA, Castle Park Assembly of God in Chula Vista, CA where she taught Sunday School, and ended at Centro Cristiano El Shadai in Chula Vista, CA where she attended over 30 plus years and was pivotal in its construction. She attended faithfully every Sunday and Tuesday. Sylvia cared deeply for many
things in life but her love for Jesus was unmatched and set above all else. Her focus was always on Him until her last breath.
Sylvia M. Garcia was a loving Child of God first and foremost followed by loving daughter, granddaughter, sister, cousin, niece, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, auntie, and friend. She was a pillar of strength and always helped those in need. Her home was always open and she always made time for anyone wanting to talk. She bestowed morals, values, integrity, love, kindness and a giving heart to those around her. She raised her children to both love and fear the Lord and never compromised the Lord’s ways or instruction. She gave when she didn’t have, often from her own portions and put the needs of others ahead of her own. She took care of the house making it a home and would stay up late praying until her children got back safely. She would celebrate birthdays and holidays to make sure everyone felt included and never felt left out. She remained loyal and faithful to her husband for over 50 years through good times, bad times, in sickness and in health. She fought every battle through prayers and walked through the fire with her faith and God by her side. She praised the Lord and read the Bible on a daily basis and embodied the scriptures she read and meditated on by living them. She was always on the go helping someone in need and always found a way to put others first. She was definitely the strength and glue that held her family together. She will forever be loved and deeply missed. Her memories, lessons, and words of wisdom will live forever. She not only ran the good race but completed it. She will be remembered by her husband Ruben S. Garcia, her children Ruben James, Gary Luis, Angelica Marie, and Raymond Angel Garcia, her grandchildren Juan Miguel and Jose Angel Rodriguez, Gary Angelo RJ, and Gabriela Marie Garcia, Victoria Belle Garcia, and her great-granddaughter Ilena Nayeli Rivera Garcia, her siblings Joseph, David, John, Victor, And Yolanda Martinez, along with her cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends any anyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
