Urbano Mon Pusing Alcantara

Urbano “Mon” Pusing Alcantara, age 73, of Jamul, California, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2026, surrounded by his daughters, sisters, and grandchildren after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mon was born on July 5, 1953, to Urbano Alcantara Sr. and Soledad Pusing, who both predeceased him. He was raised in Olongapo City, Philippines, alongside his ten siblings.

Mon was a devoted father. Sharing the highs and lows of parenting in his previous marriage with Liwayway, he spent his whole life working hard to provide and care for his children: Nathalie, Nancy, Noreen, and Urbano III. A true jack-of-all-trades, Mon could fix just about anything, and if he hadn't done it before, he'd figure it out. His life reflected the same resilience, resourcefulness, and determination.

He began his career as a waiter in the 1970s before working as a stevedore at the Naval Supply Depot at Subic Naval Base. He later worked for a shipping company in Jeddah and as a material clerk for McDermott International in Dubai before immigrating to the United States in 1988.

California quickly became his home, living in various cities before settling in San Diego, where he built a respected career as a handyman. Mon took great pride in his craft, and the quality of his work always spoke for itself. Thereafter, he worked in security until his retirement, where he was known for his unfailing work ethic and as someone you could always count on. Later in life, he was also blessed with the love and companionship of Kim, who preceded him in death.

The hands that spent a lifetime building also shaped his greatest legacy: the things he preserved for his family back in his hometown, Olongapo City. One of his proudest accomplishments was establishing Urban Coffee, a coffee shop bearing his name that brought people together just as he always did. He also dedicated himself to preserving their ancestral home, a place that honoured his roots so it may be cherished by the Alcantara family for generations to come.

Beyond what he built, Mon was also a man of deep faith. He was a devoted member of Mira Mesa Bible Baptist Church, where he found great joy in serving others. His commitment to fellowship and community continued through his involvement with the Masons of California, joining the Black Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 845 in 2016, where he later served as Chaplain in 2018 and Marshal in 2019.

Above all, Mon will be remembered for his sense of humour. He had a way of making people laugh and making everyone feel like family, whether you'd known him

for years or had only just met. His warmth, wit, and easygoing spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Mon's memory will be forever cherished by his children, Nathalie (Ronald) Esguerra, Nancy (Gerard) Binarao, Noreen (Bonifacio) Cayabyab, and Urbano (Ruth) Alcantara III; his beloved grandchildren, Shanelle, Gabryel, Trisha, Tequila, Caitlin, Gian, Ezekiel, Cayden, and Luna.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to BonitaView Sharp Hospice Care, Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary for their thoughtful service, the Black Mountain Masonic Lodge No. 845 for Mon’s Masonic Funeral Rites, and Mira Mesa Bible Baptist Church for their care and support.

A viewing and Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Glen Abbey Memorial Park & Mortuary, 3838 Bonita Rd., Bonita, CA 91902. A Masonic Funeral Service will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by reception.

In keeping with Mon's final wish and his love for Hawaiian shirts, the family kindly invites guests to wear their favourite Hawaiian prints in honour of his memory.
