Virgilio was born July 21, 1943 in Manaoag, Pangasinan, Philippines to Saturnino and Soledad Abalos. On February 11, 1966 in Cavite City, Philippines, he enlisted into the United States Navy. While on leave, he returned home to marry his high school sweetheart Melba Imanil Elarco and on September 24, 1968 they were married. Virgilio served in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years and honorably retired as a Petty Officer First Class (E-6) on October 31, 1986. Still young and wanting to continue his federal service, he was hired into the Immigration and Naturalization Service as an Immigration Clerk. While employed as a clerk, he applied within the agency to become an Immigration Inspector and at the age of 44 years old he successfully completed the academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Georgia and was assigned to the San Ysidro, California, Port of Entry. He eventually was promoted to Supervisory Immigration Inspector and for another 22 plus years he would faithfully serve the American people with vigilance, integrity, and professionalism along America’s frontline. He retired a second time from federal government service on October 31, 2009. Finally retired, he would spend his time gallivanting with his fellow retirees and spending time with his children and grandchildren whenever he could.
Virgilio is survived by his wife Melba of 50 years, son Gilbert, daughters Gail, Gemma, daughter-in-law Glenda, grandchildren Genevie, Makaila, Gabriella, Dylan, Geena, Kaitlyn, great-grandchild Isabella and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. Virgilio was a loyal and loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to everyone.
A special thank you to the people at Kindred Hospice in San Diego for their loving care and support during his final days. Also, the family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Glen Abbey Mortuary for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult time.
