Born on March 10, 1949, in Dearborn, Michigan, Carol was the second of six children born to Robert and Jewell Delavan. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Harry Groth II, as well as her siblings: Dorothy Morgan (Greenville, SC), Robert Jr. (Clarkston, MI), Gary Delavan (Warren, MI), and Larry Delavan (Troy, MI). She was preceded in death by her sister, Jane Krueger.
Carol was the beloved “go-to” aunt for her many nieces and nephews, always at the heart of family gatherings. She played a key role in organizing reunions and holiday celebrations, generously opening her home and her heart. With grace and compassion, she also cared for both sets of aging parents during their final years, never hesitating to step into the role of caregiver.
After earning a degree in social psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit, Carol embarked on a different path, beginning her career at Wayne Medical Center in the Department of Oncology. There, she thrived in an administrative role, learning valuable skills under the mentorship of an exceptional physician. That experience inspired her to eventually launch her own company, Theradex Systems, Inc., in Princeton, New Jersey.
Following early retirement, Carol and Harry moved to Hurstbourne, Kentucky, where she became active in civic life and was appointed to the city council. There, she spearheaded a new recycling initiative and continued her lifelong commitment to service. During this time, she also became the primary caregiver for her parents and mother-in-law.
In 2005, after Harry’s retirement, the couple split their time between Clarkston, Michigan—where they enjoyed life at Oakhurst Country Club—and winters in Estero, Florida, as members of Shadow Wood Country Club.
Carol faced a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease, which she met with dignity and quiet strength.
A private cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
