Michael "Mickey" Thomas Duggan

March 8, 1947 – April 14, 2026
Obituary of Michael "Mickey" Thomas Duggan
IN THE CARE OF

Hodges Life Celebration Center

Michael (Mickey) Thomas Duggan, the patriarch of our family, passed away on April 14, 2026, at the age of 79 at his home in Bonita Springs, FL, surrounded by his family and loved ones after a nearly 3-year battle with MDS blood cancer.

Mike was born on March 8, 1947, in West Branch, MI to William Duggan Sr. and Marjorie Duggan. When Mike was young, his family moved around to multiple locations including Red Oak, IA, Santa Ana, CA, and Seattle, WA before settling and building a long-term residence in Detroit, MI. His parents were both WWII veterans and met while in the service. Mike was the second oldest of four children.

Mickey understood inherently that life was best when one could genuinely connect with other people. He placed little importance in material goods, knowing that connection to others made his world infinite. He embraced --that each visit to his community pool-- was an opportunity to expand that universe through a new connection, a new understanding or insight from someone new to him or from an old friend whom he had seen countless times. He was there so frequently that people began to refer to the pool as "Duggan's Pool."

Mike started working after school at the age of 12 and began caddying at the Detroit Golf Club when he was 14. As Mike did with every job, he worked hard and gave it his all, often doing two rounds per day and eventually worked his way up to #1 caddy, after starting out as #436. He caddied for multiple PGA tournaments held in the state of Michigan, including caddying for Horton Smith, the winner of the first Masters Tournament.

Mike was raised primarily in Detroit, MI. He attended elementary school at Gesu Catholic School and attended high school at St. Gregory, where, like many Duggans before and after him, he excelled on the basketball court. He graduated from St. Gregory High School in 1965. After high school, Mike passed on playing basketball at Michigan Lutheran College and instead decided to jump right into the working world. He married his first sweetheart and the love of his life, Denise Burkett, in 1967 and together they created a fun-loving and hard-working family for the next 57 years.

Mike's career in sales spanned decades. He started in the music industry at Motown Records during its heyday in the late 1960s and moved on to RCA Records in the 1970s, eventually becoming the Midwest Sales Manager for RCA. While still at RCA, Mike moved into their fledgling video disc division in 1981. He eventually parlayed his sales experience into selling computers and peripherals first for Mitsubishi and then Ricoh, where he stayed until the early 2000s. After accepting the job with Mitsubishi, Mike moved his young family from the Detroit area to Mount Prospect, IL in April 1984, where he became Vice President of Sales for the Midwest Region. Mike and Denise resided in Mount Prospect until 2012, where they raised their three children, Bridget Kathleen, Michael Thomas Jr., and Kellen Francis. Mike loved being a father and getting to know his children's friends. He helped his children excel at the activities they enjoyed and was there with whatever support they needed. Mike and Denise moved to Southwest Florida in 2014 when they retired.

Mickey will be remembered for his humor, interest in others, generosity, open honesty, high energy, and being utterly dependable to friends and family. He was an extrovert who befriended others easily. He had a gift for gab—he knew no stranger and had a genuine curiosity and interest in others' well-being, qualities which brought him success both professionally and personally. Mickey loved to laugh and entertain; he made sure that everyone around him was having a good time. He was kind and generous with his time and love for others, always bringing laughter and cheer to those around him. Up until the last day, he had the enviable ability to meet someone once, remember their name forever, as well as their spouse's name, their children's names, and what was important and interesting to them.

Mike was a lifelong golfer, a passion which was ignited during his time at the Detroit Golf Club. His continued dedication to and love for the game resulted in his winning many company tournaments and longest drive honors in his adult years and later teaching younger children during his retirement. Mike golfed up until the days he was no longer physically able.

He'd cringe if we mentioned here that he was a skilled Euchre player, but he was. He would play whenever given the chance, whether it was late nights when he was younger or Sunday afternoons when he was older. Somehow, he usually had a pretty good idea of what card you had.

Mike is survived by his wife of 58 years, Denise G. Duggan (Burkett); his daughter Bridget Kathleen Duggan; his son Michael Thomas Duggan Jr. (married to Christina Carl); and his youngest son Kellen Duggan (married to Jaclyn Cordero); as well as his three grandchildren Aaron Ivsin, Karl Ivsin, and Monica (Mo) Ivsin, the children of Bridget Duggan and Paul Ivsin. He also leaves behind two brothers, William Jr. (wife Molly) and Patrick, and one sister, Rose Colechio. Mike leaves behind hundreds of loved ones, friends, and relatives. He was a very appreciated friend to many others.

There will be 2 Celebrations of Life for Mickey. The first one on Saturday, April 25 @ 1pm at the Pointe Clubhouse / Pool. The second one will occur in Michigan this summer at a time and place TBD.
