Annie Maurine “Sister” Duncan, 95, died Thursday, May 12, 2011, at her residence in Booneville. She was born June 10, 1915, in Prentiss County, the daughter of James Robert and Fannie Pugh Logan Hill. She was a descendant of James Jackson and Lucy Floyd Hill, Prentiss County pioneers from Anson County, North Carolina.
Graduating from Wheeler High School, Mrs. Duncan attended Blue Mountain College. Returning to the Meadow Creek Community she loved, she became a teacher at the Hopewell School.
In 1949, she became the bride of William Howard Duncan. Tragically, she became a widow in 1950 when she lost her husband in the National Guard Armory explosion in Booneville. She never remarried, as he was the love of her life.
Mrs. Duncan spent the rest of her life serving her family, church and community. A longtime member of Meadow Creek United Methodist Church, she served as Sunday School teacher, MYF sponsor, member of the administrative board and church secretary.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Meadow Creek United Methodist Church with Bro. Dalton Brown officiating. Burial will be in Meadow Creek Cemetery.
She is survived by a special niece, Susan Barron, who lovingly cared for her in her last years; a sister, Mary Edith Barron of Booneville; nieces and nephews, Martha Ruth Whatley of Columbus, GA, David Hill of Baldwyn, Beverly Bolton of Fresno, CA, Katie Jo Lindley of Booneville and Jim Hill of Booneville; sisters-in-law, Zana Hill of Booneville and Rachel Ryan of Zion, IL; brothers-in-law, Jake Duncan of Baldwyn and Roy Duncan of Booneville. The family would like to thank her special caregiver, Alma Vuncannon, who served her faithfully and lovingly.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Maurice Logan Hill and James Melville Hill; brothers-in-law, Harmon Barron, Charlie Duncan and Wade Duncan; and sisters-in-law, Maggie Cage, Willie Miller , Betty Jo Hill, Ollie Miller, Molly Cagle and Fannie Moore.
Visitation will be Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meadow Creek United Methodist Church.
