He was born on September 25, 1925, in Parsons, KS, the son of Virgil Andrew and Ruth (Glasscock) Berry, both of whom preceded him in death. He was married on November 15, 1947, in Lone Elm, MO, to Elvadine Schnack, who preceded him in death on August 9, 2002.
James graduated from New Franklin High School. During World War II, James served in China in the Air Force and was recalled to active duty in the Korean Conflict. He worked for AT&T and later for Southwestern Bell as a Repeaterman. He had many skills and talents—he was a woodworker who could recreate and repair furniture, and was a Ham radio enthusiast, talking to people all over the world. He built his first ham radio from parts, and one year for the family Christmas built a color TV from a kit.
He is survived by: his son, Jan (Karen) Berry of Arrow Rock; son-in-law, Charlie Melkersman of Boonville; grandchildren: James (Megan) Berry, Evan (Dakota) Melkersman, and Kylie (Evan) Woodward; great-grandchildren: Amelia and Ellie; and one niece, Nan Berry. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sandy Melkersman; and one brother, William M. Berry.
