Johnnie Martin, 83, of New Franklin, MO passed away, Saturday, September 30, 2017 at his home surrounded by family. The little fella was born June 22, 1934 in Wooldridge, MO to Ralph A. and Iris M. Buerky Martin.
He worked as a Union Carpenter and was an active member of Carpenter’s local 110 in St. Joseph, MO for 57 years. Throughout the years he worked on many construction projects including laying the first brick on the Hearnes Center in Columbia, MO. He retired after 33 years of service and held a position of Superintendent for Lawhon Construction of St. Joseph, MO. He served 2 years in the US Army, spending time in Germany; he received special recognition as a sharpshooter. He enjoyed annual float trips to Arkansas with his brother Forrest and friends, making the famous “Johnnie One-Eye” wine with Roy Holley and having the occasional “floater” of good whiskey. He loved watching his children, grandchildren, and neighborhood kids play sports in his backyard. He enjoyed schooling everyone on how to cut and grill the perfect steak. He was an avid Chiefs fan and loved the St. Louis Cardinals; never missed watching a game.
On November 8, 1955 he married Dorothy “Sue” and she preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Kenneth; and sister, Dorothy Seifert. He is survived by his beloved wife, Beryl; children, Mike (Cindy) Martin of St. Joseph, MO, Dana Martin of St. Joseph, MO, Ralph (Heather) Martin of Tipton, MO, Sharon (Mike) Pearson of Ashland, MO, Debbie McFarland (Ray Yoder) of Clark, MO, Scott (Genet) Sedgwick of Rocheport, MO, and Neal (Christine) Sedgwick of Columbia, MO; grandchildren, Michael Martin, Blaine Martin, Stephanie Benight, Jennifer Daniels, Brandy Daniels, Brandon Daniels, Kaytlin Wilson, Brendan Martin, William Martin, Lee Pearson, Rhiannon Ross, David McFarland, Michael Schoen, Shawna Harris, Emily Barnes, Bryce McFarland, Jackson Sedgwick, Drew Sedgwick, Owen Sedgwick, Meghan Sedgwick, and Quinn Sedgwick, 25 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, brother Forrest (Anna Lee) Martin of Wooldridge, MO, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 4, 2017 from 5-7pm at William Wood Funeral Home 517 4th Street, Boonville, MO. Funeral Service will be 2pm, Thursday, October 5, at the Funeral Home and burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Boonville. Immediately following the burial, a dinner will be held at the Community Building in Wooldridge, MO.
The family wishes to express their deepest Thank You to Luana Hazlett and Judy Luscomb for their care, compassion, and dedication to Johnnie and his family. They would also like to thank Dr. Khanna of Columbia, MO and Hometown Homecare of Fayette, MO for their hospice services.
