Catherine (Shults) “Kay” Menand, died in her sleep at Brookhaven, in Lexington, on October 6. She was born in Herkimer, New York, July 2, 1928, the daughter of Byron Shults, the town doctor, and Ethyl (Sparbier) Shults. She graduated from Vassar, class of 1949, where she met Louis Menand III. They were married in 1949 and lived in Haverhill, Washington D. C., Lexington, and Boston. Kay taught at Garland Community College, then began a career as an archivist, becoming Director of Archives and Records Preservation at the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. A talented writer, she published scholarly articles on colonial history. Her biography of Samuel Adams was unfinished at the time of her death. She is survived by her three children—Luke, Connie, and Nick—and four grandchildren: Lev, Miranda, Joseph, and Patrick. Services are private.
