Charles A. Austin III, of Boston and Delray Beach, FL, died peacefully on the morning of May 31, 2021 at the age of 86. He was born in Elmira, NY, the eldest of four children of the late Marguerite Young and Charles A. Austin II. He attended Mercersburg Academy and Lehigh University. Following graduation, he became a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Antietam (CV-36) and at the Naval War College in Newport, RI.
Following his honorable discharge, he moved to Boston and began his career with Price Waterhouse. In 1966, he joined State Street Research and Management where he became a partner. He celebrated with a nice, used Jaguar XKE in which he took his children on terrifying rides. Upon the acquisition of SSR&M by Metropolitan Life Insurance, Charlie decided he wanted to try something new and transitioned to investment advisor. He worked for several firms and in 2018 retired from Anchor Capital.
Charlie enjoyed skiing with his family at Timber Ridge in Vermont and boating on Lake Winnipesauke but his passion was golf and it played a major part in his life. He was fortunate to have traveled to play golf in the U.S. and overseas. He held memberships at The Country Club in Brookline, Gulfstream Golf Club, Gulf Stream Bath & Tennis, The Little Club and the US Seniors Golf Association.
Charlie had major volunteer roles in the 1988 US Open and the 1999 Ryder Cup, both played at The Country Club. As his handicap rose, he took up curling and became an avid participant. He especially liked the men’s tournaments in Montreal. For many years, he also served in different capacities on the Boards of The Francis Ouimet Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Catherine Scifres and his three children, Charles A. Austin IV (Elinor) of Los Angeles, CA, Samantha Ide Young (David) of Haverhill, MA, and Frederick A. Austin (Stacy) of Portland, OR. He also leaves 3 beautiful grandchildren: Emma, Augusta, and Fisher. He was predeceased by his two children, Curtis Young Austin and Alice Sabin Austin. He is also survived by his former wife, Dawn Ide Ansty, his brother Louis W. Austin, and his sister Suzanne Strother. He was preceded in death by his sister Gayle Keen.
We want to thank his caregiver Maureen and The Rogerson House for the wonderful care that they have given him over the past 2 years.
There will be a private family ceremony. A celebration to remember Charlie will be planned for the fall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Francis Ouimet Foundation, 300 Arnold Palmer Blvd., Norton, MA 02766.
Charlie will forever be remembered for his one liners, plentiful #2 ½ pencils, and love of vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. He lived for staying in the game... right up to the final final.
