Joan Ellen Clifford, 73, of Wellesley, died Sep. 24 in her childhood home.

She married Hanley Wayne Clifford in March of 1969 and had 2 children, Holly and Henry.

Later in life she moved back in with her parents in Wellesley to take care of them in their final years. After they had passed she went to work at Briarwood Nursing home in Newton, where her father spent his last days. It was the small things, like helping a resident make a card to send to a loved one that brought her the most joy.

I was shocked last night to hear of Joan’s passing. We’ve tried to stay in touch over the years but it had been months since we’d connected.
We were like sisters, growing up across the street from each other on Bay View Road on “Pond Hill”. Both of us were single children, both adopted - we extended each other’s families. I can picture us on the first day of school, probably 2nd or 3rd grade, standing together on the road between our houses in almost matching plaid dresses. So many, many memories. Joan was a good and kind person with a big heart.
My condolenses to her family.

Memories! If my memory serves me, Joan (Holland) was my first girl friend at WJHS when all of the elementary schools converged there, c. 1959. Sorry to hear of her passing!

"Old school" memories, .. those were the days. I look back as very fortunate to have the happy memories we as classmates have and are able to share. Those were the days! Joan you will always be remembered and your passing is a loss we all grieve. To your family I want you to know how sad we are for all of you and how deeply sorry we are to hear of the passing of a quality "friend". Rest in Peace.

I am sad to hear this. She was a good friend during all my school years. We shared laughs, tears, good times and bad. May her family and friends know that she is remembered with love. Rest peacefully, Dear Joan.

I was so sorry to hear that Joan had passed. Growing up we were friends through grammar school days at Hardy School. We enjoyed being Brownies and Girl Scouts together, and taking horseback riding lessons. I have many happy childhood memories of times at her home on Bay View Rd., of her play house and of her dad who was such a tease. Though we lost touch over the years after leaving Wellesley, I remember Joan fondly and am saddened to hear of her death. My condolences to her family. Paula ( Lyons) Moses
