

Lawrence “Larry” Paul Smetana of Boston and Plymouth, unexpectedly passed away peacefully in his home on January 9th, a day after his 78th birthday. He is the beloved husband of 38 years to Sheila Mello. He was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on January 8th 1944, son of the late Frank and Margaret Smetana. He was preceded in death by his siblings Frank Smetana and Elaine Pavlik and his son Jeff. Larry graduated from University of Bridgeport where he received his bachelor’s degree with honors in Marketing. He received his MBA from Fairleigh Dickenson University in 1980. He started his career at Ingersoll-Rand where he progressed through Sales to the Worldwide Marketing Manager where he met and fell madly in love with Sheila. Larry worked his way up in high tech marketing positions to finish his career as the President of Schneeberger US Operations.
Larry loved to explore foreign countries and he and Sheila enjoyed several cruises and excursions around the world. He most enjoyed their vacations with their four children Paul, Karen, Michelle, and Matt; and more recently with their families. Larry was an accomplished sailor and especially enjoyed racing any other sailboat around. But his first love was golf which drove him to the White Cliffs Country Club Community. He loved playing golf and teaching his children and grandchildren how to play. One of his biggest regrets was not being able to play golf due to his health his last couple of years.
Larry is survived by his loving wife Sheila, his son Paul and partner Kimberly Yorio, his daughter Karen Scurti and her husband Michael Scurti, his stepdaughter Michelle Greenberg and her husband Bruce Greenberg and his stepson Matthew Mello and partner Nikki del Castillo. He was the beloved “Granpa” of Zack, Lauren, Sal, Ryan, Michael, Thomas, and Max. Lawrence is also survived by his beloved baby sister Carol Ackerman.
A celebration of Larry’s Life will be held at a later date. Burial at Sharon Memorial Cemetery will be private. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston.
