Soo Ping (Lee) Leong was born in China in 1931. She grew up with two older brothers in Taisan, a small suburb in the Canton province. After the war, she married her husband, Chor Kwan Leong. In 1950, they moved to Hong Kong together and settled there. They had three daughters before her husband immigrated to Boston in 1952. She rejoined him in 1961, and they had two more children, a daughter and a son.
Soo Ping was a devoted wife and a loving mother. She based her life around the well being of her husband, children, and grandchildren. She took great pride in raising a close-knit and strong, supportive family. She taught her children to be kind, honest, and independent. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren's achievements.
Soo Ping was an excellent cook. It was not unusual for her to spend a whole day buying groceries in Chinatown to prepare an authentic and traditional Chinese meal, so the whole family could get together for dinner each weekend. She loved to make sweet rice wraps and noodles, which her grandchildren craved.
In her spare time, Soo Ping loved to garden. She always looked forward to the spring time so she could start her outdoor garden. She grew a lot of Chinese vegetables and shared her harvest with friends and neighbors. She had a passion for cultivating a variety of Chinese flowering plants to remind her of her Chinese heritage.
Soo Ping was a big sports fan. Even though she did not fully understand the rules and regulations, she regularly watched and cheered for all of the Boston teams. She also enjoyed watching game shows, especially Family Feud.
Later in life, Soo Ping enjoyed traveling, especially cruising with her children. She visited many Caribbean islands, as well as most of the countries in Europe and Asia. She deeply appreciated the various cultures and loved trying the different cuisines.
Soo Ping's genuine, caring spirit and love for her family will be a source of strength for her family. She will be forever missed.
