I'm saddened to learn of the death of You En Li. He was a terrific artist and a wonderful gentleman.

I was the principal of the Edward Devotion School, a 750-student, K-8, urban-suburban, public school in Brookline. The director of the Devotion After School Enrichment Program invited Mr. Li to paint scenery for her theatrical productions. Because of the heavy use of the performing space and the nature of the painting, he could only work at odd times - usually late at night. That's when we developed a friendship. I appreciated his skills. And he was always kind and gentle and humble. His work was so respectful of our young actors, dancers, singers, instrumentalists, and audiences.

I retired in June 2006. Once in awhile Mr. Li and my paths would cross in Brookline. I cherished those times. Our conversations were short but they meant the world to me. I was lucky to have known him.

Please accept my sympathy.

Mr. Li taught my son drawing for over two years. He was a wonderful teacher and incredibly patient and kind to my son. I feel so sad for his sudden passing. We all miss him terribly.
