

Alfred C. Peters, DMD, of Bartlett, NH, passed away at his summer home in Pocasset surrounded by his family on Thursday, September 21, 2017. Ninety-one years old, he was the son of the late Carl "Opa" and Mary "Oma" (Schmid) Peters. He was the beloved husband of Janet (Dickson) Peters and the late Therese (Paget) Peters.
Born in Cambridge, Dr. Peters was a dentist in private practice in West Roxbury for 45 years. He played football for Boston Latin and Boston College, and graduated from Tufts Dental School at the age of 21. From 1946 to 1956, he served as Reserve Commissioned Officer in the grade of Major in the 114th Medical Battalion of the U.S. Army. At the age of 60, Dr. Peters entered Simmons College where he earned his Master of Social Work degree. In 1985 the Massachusetts Dental Society adopted his program, the Committee on Drug and Alcohol Dependency, which provided dentists with counseling and support for their addiction recovery. He provided charity dental care to those in need, including making trips to Honduras with Cape Care. Dr. Peters served on the Massachusetts Board of Registration for Dental Examiners, and as an assistant professor at the Dental Schools of Tufts, BU, and Harvard.
An avid skier, Dr. Peters both taught and skied with his extended family around the world, spending most of his time at Attitash Mountain in NH, where he was a member of AOGA. He traveled extensively, and was a lifelong tennis player and cyclist. He spent much of his time in and on the water, was a gardener and landscaper, creating beauty with his flowers.
He was the loving father of Karl Peters and his partner, Jeannette, of Plaistow, NH, Alfred and his wife, Laurel, of Mattapoisett, John and his wife, Dianne, of Fairhaven, Gerard of New Bedford, Therese Stephens and her husband, Jerome of Scituate, Chris of Framingham, Kurt and his wife, Kimberly, of Scituate, and Julia Peters and her husband, Paul Fenn of California and Pocasset. He is also survived by his wife's children, Robert Shain and fiancé Rosi Albuquerque of Sandwich, Mike Shain of Bourne, and Betsy Barry of Easton. He was "Opa" to his 18 grandchildren and his nine great-grandchildren. He was brother-in-law to Kitty Dukakis and her husband Michael, and son-in-law to Harry Ellis Dickson of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops.
Visiting Hours will be held at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd, (On the right just over the bridge), Bourne, MA on Sunday, October 1, 2017 4 to 8 p.m. A Memorial Service and Reception to follow will be held on Monday, October 2, 2017 from 12 to 4 p.m. with the service to begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Brookside Club, 11 Brigadoone Rd, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532.
