Bourne - In the loving embrace of her devoted children, Alice Francis Lathrop Dunbury passed away, on June 20, 2022, at the age of 86. The family is thankful to Peter LeBrun and the staff at Sippican Healthcare in Marion, MA, who cared for our mom in her final days.
Alice was born on July 30, 1935, in Holyoke, MA, to Emery Lathrop and Josephine Champagne Lathrop. As a young girl, Alice was a top student at Mount Saint Mary's Academy in New Hampshire. Alice enjoyed summers with her brother, Paul, at their family home on Old Lyme Shores in Connecticut, and winter vacations at the McFadden Dovell Hotel, on Miami Beach. Alice loved the sun and the sea throughout her life, almost as much as she loved politics and her country. Following high school, Alice enrolled at the College of New Rochelle in New York, where she was the "belle of the ball" at social events and parties throughout New York City. After transferring to Boston University to be closer to her mother, who was ailing at the time, Alice met the love of her life, Frederick John Dunbury, Sr., to whom she was married for nearly 50 years. Fred was a decorated Korean War veteran, multi-sport collegiate athlete, and long-standing teacher, coach and administrator in the Bourne School District.
Alice and Fred raised their 6 children, first, at a small ranch house on Clay Pond Road in Monument Beach, and later, in their dream home on Red Brook Harbor Road in Cataumet. Over 45 years, Alice and Fred refurbished their home into a beautiful Queen Anne Victorian landmark. While raising her children, Alice supplemented the family's income working many jobs; culminating in the creation of Inside Out, a cleaning business which she originated with her dear friend, Peg Palmer. In her later years, Alice enjoyed weekly breakfasts with “the girls.” An impressive group of women in their 80's and 90's, they enjoyed lively discussions about politics, religion, history, art and literature, and most importantly, family.
Alice is survived by her children; Cynthia (Marc) Solomon, Jon (Erika) Dunbury, Pamela (Jeffrey) Seifried, Anthony Dunbury, and Sandra (Michael) Mumford. Alice always held close to her heart, the memory of her deceased son, Frederick John Dunbury, Jr. Alice is also survived by her brother, Paul Lathrop, and their extended family members, as well as 7 grandchildren; Sacha (Marco) Barrera and Frederick Solomon, Emery and Camden Dunbury, Nicole, Ella and Jon Thomas Dunbury, and 3 great grandchildren; Milo, Reece and Bo Barrera. As Alice often said, "All's well that ends well." Mom, you did very well. We will miss you, and you will never, ever be forgotten.
Visiting hours will be held at The Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne, MA, on Tuesday, June 28th, from 5:00–7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, 841 Shore Road, Pocasset, MA, on Wednesday June 29th, at 10:00 AM.
The burial will be private.
Donations in Alice’s memory may be made to the Frederick J. Dunbury Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Pamela Seifried, PO Box 315, Monument Beach, MA 02553
