Anthony P. MacDonald

Tony was born in Utica, New York, on September 9, 1935, to Gerald C. MacDonald and Mildred E. (Hayes) MacDonald. The second of four sons, Tony grew up alongside his beloved brothers, Jack, Gerald, and Vince. His brother Gerald was tragically killed in 1943. Tony, Jack, and Vince all eventually found their way to New England and remained close through all of life’s challenges.

If ever there were someone who embodied the saying “They don’t make ’em like that anymore,” it was Tony.

Born during the Great Depression, Tony and his brothers were raised to treasure family, friends, and old-fashioned hard work above all else. Without a doubt, Tony MacDonald mastered those lessons.

A proud veteran, Tony served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1962. He later settled in Massachusetts with Evelyn (Drugan) MacDonald, the love of his life. Tony earned his accounting degree from Northeastern University. He went on to enjoy a long and successful career in financial management. His final position before retirement was undoubtedly his favorite, working alongside his close friend David Nunes at Hosokawa Alpine American.

Tony was the proverbial everyman. He valued a job well done and could fix just about anything. He loved tinkering and, long before the smartphone era, became a self-made expert in technology, wiring, small engines, and personal computers. An avid reader and sports fan, he could talk just as easily about history as he could about the previous night’s Red Sox game.

Tony was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, colleague, and friend. Quiet by nature, he possessed a sharp intellect, steady judgment, and genuine kindness. He made friends easily and offered guidance in a calm, gentle, but forthright way—a true gift he possessed in spades. He had a remarkable way of stepping into the places where he was needed most. To many, he was not simply a friend or relative, but a father or grandfather in every way that mattered.

In recent years, Tony and Evelyn split their time between their homes in Framingham and Bourne. He treasured spontaneous visits from family and friends. The outside patio “down the Cape” became a cherished gathering place.

Tony was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Mildred; his daughter, Paula; and his brothers, Gerald and Jack.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn; his son, Michael, his granddaughters, Victoria (MacDonald) Bradley and her husband, Jonathan, and Leilani; his grandson, Michael; his brother, Vince and his wife, Rose; his brother-in-law, Richard Drugan, and his wife, Lee; and many loving nephews, nieces, and their children.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Boulevard, Bourne, Massachusetts. A funeral service will begin at 11:30, followed by burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Tony’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association.
