It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother Carol Schroeder Jones—affectionately known as “Granny”—on June 5, 2025, at the age of 95.
Carol was born in May 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Wilmer D. and Mary Schaffer Schroeder. She married Thomas R. Jones, of Oswego, New York in 1952. While raising her four children on Cleveland’s West Side, she pursued her lifelong dream of teaching by earning her credentials from Baldwin Wallace College in the early 1970s. She realized her aspirations at North Olmsted High School, where she taught American History. “Ma Jones,” as she was affectionately known by students, was the quintessential involved educator—enthusiastically advising the yearbook (NOHIAN), the hockey team, and the “louder than necessary” (her words) "Bandstand."
After the 1980 passing of her husband, Thomas R. Jones, Carol forged a new and independent path by moving to Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1983. There, she designed and built her own home, becoming a vibrant part of the community in her cherished Sandwich Village, including volunteering as a docent at the Sandwich Glass Museum.
The quiet winters of Cape Cod were the perfect atmosphere to nurture Carol’s creative and intellectual passions. She taught herself to braid wool rugs, explore early computing, conduct genealogy research, and quilting. Though she tried her hand at doll making, teddy bear making, and stenciling, quilting was her calling. Her quilting evolved, becoming a study of color theory, intricate design, and advanced pattern work. Then, combining her two loves of teaching and quilting, Carol began instructing others in the craft—her “Scrappy Tuesdays” at Tumbleweed Quilt Shop became a treasured tradition.
Among Carol’s greatest joys were summers spent with her grandchildren on the Cape. “Granny” made every vacation magical, planning adventures, crafts, and beach days at Sandy Neck that remain deeply cherished memories.
Carol is survived by her four children: Robin Jones Weaver (Mark Weaver), Charles R. Jones (Geralyn Jones née Cantz), Elizabeth Jones (Peter C. Haller), and Thomas F. Jones (Sue Fisher, d. 2023); five grandchildren: Ryan R. Jones (Amber Jones née Miller), Samantha Jones Stephenson, Dr. Kyle T. Jones (Christina Stavrakas), Amanda Sledz née Weaver (Jacob Sledz), and Emily R. Weaver; and one great-grandchild, Theodore C. Jones.
Her family would like to extend our thanks to the staff of Keystone Place at Buzzards Bay for their attentive and kind care of Carol during these last nearly 4 years. Further, a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Beacon Hospice for their excellent care and support during her final weeks.
At Carol’s request, there will be no formal service. Her life lived with passion, creativity, and independence is her lasting legacy. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
