Carolyn Louise Nelson (Graves) was born on August 17, 1934 in Brewer, Maine to the late Myron Edwin and Celia Leona Graves (Ginn). She grew up in Brewer, Mars Hill, Fort Kent, and lastly Lubec, Maine where she graduated high school.
Carolyn enjoyed family outings, summer camps, and reading. She graduated college from Colby in Waterville, ME and studied Business Administration. She had a few different jobs in hotels over a few summers. She secured a job at Provident Institution for Savings, during this time she shared an apartment on Beacon Hill with friends. She joined a youth group at the Arlington St. Unitarian Church, it was at this youth group where she met Robert W. Nelson and on July 26, 1958 they were married.
Carolyn and Robert moved to a garden apartment on Beacon St. in Boston, MA. Robert was in his last year at Northeastern University and upon graduation secured a position with Factory Insurance Association. The couple lived in Hawthorne, NJ, Buffalo, NY and settled in Hartford, CT, while Robert had to travel for work. During this time Carolyn became involved in the Order of the Eastern Star and the local Women’s Club. She took varied offices in Temple Chapter and in 1975 she was elected to the position of Worthy Matron. After completing her term as Worthy Matron she was elected to the position of secretary of the Temple Chapter, a position she held for ten years. In 1986 she was appointed to the office of Grand Martha of the Grand Chapter of Connecticut Order of the Eastern Star. When Bob retired they moved to Pocasset, MA, where Carolyn was active in the Bourne Historical Society and the Bourne Society of Historic Preservation, and the Aptucxet Garden Club.
She is survived by her husband Robert W. Nelson to whom shared 65 years in marriage, and her distant cousin Stephen Hathaway of Prospect, Maine.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday September 12th from 2-4pm at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 40 MacArthur Blvd. Bourne, MA., burial will be held on Tuesday September 19th at 2pm at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Prospect, Maine.
