MA. He was born January 27 th , 1921 in Brooklyn, NY to Cornelius Creedon Maher and Camille Thompson Maher.
A 1943 graduate of Fordham University, Neil proudly served in the US Army Air Corps with the 384th
Bomb Group during and after WWII. While serving, he was pilot of the B-17 bomber, the “Pauline”, based
at Grafton Underwood in England.
During the war, he and Hester Eleanor Sullivan were introduced through the mail by Sisters of St. Joseph
of Brentwood, NY, his Aunt and her Sister, who decided they would make a good match. Neil and “Peg-
O-My-Heart” married April 10, 1948 at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Brooklyn, NY. Peg preceded him in
death in June of 2012.
Neil spent his 30+ year career with United Fruit Co. managing operational logistics for Chiquita Bananas,
in the process moving his young family to Newton, MA. In his final role at that company, he directed the
philanthropic activity of the company’s foundation, supporting schools and hospitals in Central America.
Neil & Peg fully retired in 1990, moving to Monument Beach in Bourne on Cape Cod.
For fun, Neil loved to troll for trout in the kettle-hole ponds of the Cape.
He was active with Boy Scout Troop 331, based at Our Lady Help of Christians in Newton. During that
time, the troop produced 17 Eagle Scouts, including his three sons. Most of those Eagles mustered on a
ZOOM call to celebrate his 100 th birthday last January.
In retirement, Neil spent many pleasurable days with friends in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-
2, where he was known as a smart and funny raconteur.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife of 64 years, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Camille
& Robert, their spouses, and many relatives and friends.
Left to honor his memory are his sons, Cornelius Creedon Maher III (Lynn), Peter Sullivan Maher (Jane),
