

Domenick A. Volpe died on July 16, 2012 at the wonderful age of 95 leaving behind three devoted daughters, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. A vibrant man, Dom, was a patriot whose love for his country with all its freedoms and opportunities carried him from the Normandy Invasion during World War II as a First Sergeant to the New York State Commandership of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (1977-8). An All-American Commander at the State and District levels, his leadership and promotion of war veterans is legendary.
Dom was predeceased in death by his loving and loyal wife, Jean Mackenzie Volpe, in 2008; they both lived at Decatur House in Sandwich, MA in their latter years, making new friends after having spent their lives and childhoods in Brooklyn, New York.
Dom Volpe was a self-made man who lived by his wits, intelligence, and grit to make a good life for his family; he was a plucky entrepreneur in the food industry, who also worked for NYC Civil Defense, the federal Park Service, Bellevue Hospital, and Appeal Printing. He worked two and three jobs at a time to make sure his family was well cared for, stressing the importance of a good education and individual responsibility.
Domenick was famous for his ever-present sense of humor, his superlative culinary and grilling skills, and his commitment to his family. His proud daughters: Ann V. Daley, Walpole, MA; Janet V. Vailokaitis, Manhattan Beach, CA; and Denise V. Sullivan, Cataumet, MA as well as his extended family learned a lot from the “Old Vet,” God speed.
Domenick Volpe, the 5th child of Italian immigrants, grew up in Brooklyn, NY. He served as a First Sergeant of a combat team of 150 men attached to the 29th division, landing on Omaha Beach, Normandy on June 7, 1944. When the war ended, he married his sweetheart, Jean, had 3 daughters and was an entrepreneur in the food industry. He joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars and ultimately rose to the rank of NY State Commander. He was a magnetic personality who was devoted to his family, country, and the Yankees.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Rd, East Sandwich, Ma. Burial with Military Honors will follow at The Massachusetts National Cemetery at 12:45 PM.
