A native of Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania, he went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Sciences at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. Dr. Ewald went on to medical school at Milton S Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA followed by residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Endocrinology and additional certification in Geriatrics at West Penn Hospital and UPMC in Pittsburgh, PA While training in Pittsburgh, John had the honor of working closely with Thomas E Starzl, a pioneer in kidney and liver transplant surgery. Additionally, in his Endocrinology fellowship he trained with Joslin Clinic for Diabetes. He sang solo in Coffee Shops and was a member of the band, ‘Institution of Sound’ while in college. He enjoyed fishing on ‘his pond’, snorkeling and bicycling. John felt civic involvement a duty, and he volunteered for both of Elizabeth Warren’s campaigns and others. John’s faith was a focus of his life. His father, Louis, was a Lutheran Minister and his grandparents were missionaries in China for 45 years. John’s mother: Emeline Bucher, aunts and uncles all spoke a Chinese language and lived most of their lives in China.
